I ordered NTL 600k broadband on 15/07/03 and had it installed on the 19/07/03. I got a 'Direct Debit Advance Notice' email from ntl on 15/08, which informed me that £46.65 would be take out of my account on 04/09/2003. & that is what happened. I assumed that the amount was for 1 & a bit months, cos i had it from the 19th, but im not sure if that's the case...

Then towards the end of August i upgraded to 1mb, and was expecting to be paying £34.99 a month, but then on 03/10, £40.99 was taken from my account by NTL, this time without any email notification as before. Im not sure what this payment would be for, apart from the monthly charge.

I was wondering if i have overlooked anything before contacting NTL about the payments. & if the amounts taken were normal. btw broadband is the only ntl product i have.
Any advice would be appreciated.
TIA

They may have upgraded you mid month and therefore you are paying month & bit again...

Right, working this out, assuming your billing date is the 15th of every month:

First Bill (generated 15/08):
Charged for usage 19/07-14/08 (26 days) at £24.99/month: £24.99 / 30 = £0.833 per day. 26 days * £0.833 per day = £21.66.
Advance charge for usage 15/08-14/09 - £24.99
Add these together, and you get £46.65

Now, that's relatively simple. The second month is slightly less so (assuming you upgraded on August 25th, as you don't specify a date):
Refund of 600K charge 25/08-14/09 (20 days): 20 days * £0.833 per day = £16.66
Charge for 1M service 25/08-14/09 (20 days): £34.99 / 30 = £1.166 per day. 20 days * £1.166 per day = £23.32
Advance charge for 1M service 15/09-14/10: £34.99
Thus, £34.99 + £23.32 - £16.66 = £41.65

So I've obviously got the date wrong, but that's roughly how it works! Hope this makes things clearer!

There should be absolutely no speculation or doubt when someone removes funds from your bank account.

From the Direct Debit Guarantee (http://www.directdebit.co.uk/new_business/guarantee.php):
"If the amount to be paid or the payment dates change the organisation will notify you normally 10 working days in advance of your account being debited or as otherwise agreed."
