View Full Version : Bees nest in garden

Just found a bees nest in holly bush in garden. I know bees are good for the garden plant but I'm not too happy about a nest in the garden, prefer them to be in a beekeeper's hive.

Does anyone know if beekeepers charge to remove the nest?

I imagine that the colony could be useful to a beekeeper.

Help before I get stung!

Thanks

Try calling your local council tomorrow as they may be able to give you the number of a local that can help you out. If not they may charge to remove the nest.

I'll get my wife to do that! Thanks.

Or look in the Yellow Pages for bee keepers - you may find that one of them has lost a hive full of bees, or would be willing to come and remove yours.......for free! :D

Most keepers will remove them for free, they then use the workers for the honey.

Thanks, I hoped perhaps they MIGHT remove them for free!

Will let you know what happens!

Isn't that like aiding slave labour? :)

Local bee keepers don't seem to be interested :( , so...told the bees to buzz off :D and put insecticide around and on the nest

Is it not iligal to destroy a bees nest.... tut tut on you.... :D

But then again, i can barley handle one in the house let alone a garden full... I know what I would do ;)

AFAIK that only applies to "solitary" bees, like bumble bees who do not form a large colony. It does not apply to honey bees which form a large colony.

I did not want to do this, but local bee keepers just did not want to know!

The local council's environment department might be better able to help you (safer than DIY and not too costly)

The council put us in touch with a bee keeper, who wasn't interested, said they would go away.

If I have further problems with the bees, I will be getting in touch with the council or a pest controller, although neither has a good track record for getting rid of ants!!

ants just use a kettle, and some water. instant death of the colony :)

Seems this thread is crawling into insecticies territory :D

of course scalding bees would make me boil, but scolding them may work - if there are any left after dave has burnt them....;)

I could get rid of the ants by burning the house down, but I don't think that's a good idea. :D

I could get rid of the ants using boiling water, if I could find the nest somewhere under the floor, but I don't want to remove all the flooring. :D

And I could get rid of the bees by burning them, but I don't want to burn down the garden. :D

The insecticide method seems to have got rid of the bees, unfortunately the ants are more stubborn, just have to keep them confined to under the floor. ;)

How much longer will this thread run..............................?

King Crimson - superb stuff, the bee song is only Monty Python, not the same at all ;)

- you want the gel ant killer, the powder ant killer, the spray ant killer and any thing else that says 'ant' & 'killer' - this is according to Mrs Gaz, who has all those things - I just stand back in awe, & appreciate our ant free zone ;)

Raistlin

The gel ant killer is actually pretty good.

Just let the little blighters walk into the dish, carry the gel back to the nest on their feet, couple of days - no more ants :)

yeah, well if you are too humane to use boiling water, nippon bait stations are good for killing them off pretty sharpish... (the ants that is).

and if you don't want to burn down your garden, just use smoke... tried and tested by beekeepers for driving bees away ;)

bonzoe
15-07-2005, 14:52
In my experience, Nippon ant bait just feeds the ants, they keep coming back for more...........nothing to suggest that it kills the all the ants in the nest :(

And there's no smoke without fire ;)
