Friend of mine (honest) got new pc for her 14yr old son. ntl sent new disc to load broadband but he's getting the 169 IP number and a message saying 'Network Adaptor Error'.

Now I have no idea about this (did read the 169 thread though). He's phoned tech support who told him to try it again in a few days and if it doesn't work then there is something wrong with his pc ??? (it's brand new). They also suggested he gets one of his mates to look at it ???

Any help appreciated. Many thanks.

Is he connecting via Ethernet or USB?
SACM or Set top Box
Any firewalls running?

It's a sacm & ethernet. His mum tells me she paid extra for Norton so I'm guessing he has got a firewall. Should he have been told to disable it then?

norton firewall should be disabled- as it may be blocking the ip address renewal requests.

Try removing the coaxial cable from the modem and then renewing the ip address... does it go to 192.xxx.xxx.xxx or remain as 169??
