I havn't myself, but have heard it needs doing every week?

Also there was some talk of it making your gums recede.

Every week - nah man - it lasts anything from 18 to 24 months.

Do you mean surgical/laser or just the gritty toothpastes?

I've used the toothpastes in the past and my dentist said that I should stop as it will cause decay quicker because you are effectively grinding the teeth down. She also told me that any whitening methods kill of some of the tooth through the treatment as the tooth under a microscope looks like a sponge and it's the softer substance in the holes that gets whitened therefore allowing more (albeit very small) chance of a cavity.

She might have been scaring me (it worked!) but make your own mind up.

What put me off was the fact that they have to protect the tissues in your mouth........I have a very sensitive gag reflex....

Nah - they put a gel on your teeth and then hit you with a UV light for about an hour - after the hour the gel comes off and viola - shiney white teeth apparently...

Heres a shot of an unfortunate getting it done.

Crikey that sounds painful, even thuogh I'm sure it isnt.
I guess you have the option of either buying all those special toothpastes and it taking a while to do, or for the immediate effect booking an appointment with your dentist.

Quoting from Which? Online:

Whitening toothpastes often claim to return teeth to their 'natural whiteness', but they won't make your teeth whiter than they are naturally. If you want teeth that are whiter still, you'll need much more expensive bleaching kits or a specialist clinical treatment.

Of the seven branded and generic whitening toothpastes we looked at, two - Aquafresh Multi-Action Whitening and Macleans Whitening - contain the added ingredient triclene, which the manufacturers claim helps break down stains on teeth so that they're more easily brushed away. But so far there's limited literature on how well triclene will achieve this.

Other whitening toothpastes contain different ingredients that work in a similar way, as well as the same mix of abrasives and cleaners as ordinary non-whitening products. Most ordinary pastes contain the ingredient hydrated silica, which is an abrasive that helps remove stains, for example.

If you need to get rid of stains and want to try a whitening toothpaste, don't waste money paying more for a branded product. Tesco Total Care plus Whitening own-brand paste was the cheapest we came across, at 86p per 100ml, compared with £3.99 per 100ml for Sensodyne Gentle Whitening, our most expensive paste.

Boots Smile Whitening was strongly criticised. It costs 50p more than Boots' standard paste but, say our experts, has 'virtually the same formulation.'

Our experts weren't convinced that whitening pastes were good value for money. 'It is £1 more expensive than the non-whitening paste with probably the same outcome' was one assessment of Aquafresh Multi-Action Whitening.

But the good news is you don't need to worry if you've heard that whitening toothpastes' abrasive action damages your teeth. Our experts found that all the whitening products they looked at fell within recommended guidelines.

[...]

Some of the positive results experienced by the testers could be because they'd brushed their teeth for longer (the two minutes demanded by the trial) rather than the use of whitening paste alone. So, before buying a whitening paste to remove stains, try brushing for longer with your existing paste.

And, even though three quarters of the testers said that the appearance of their teeth had improved, only half of our testers thought this sufficient incentive to buy the paste again.

As far as I know it is a kind of bleaching process, which is completley painless, £400 is a bargain, I want vineers putting on my teeth, but that is painful as they grind the tooth down.

Well, im looking at the gold package here (http://www.laserbrite.co.uk/) but i need to speak to them first - they have had good writeups here and have featured in articles in The Scotsman as a sucess story. They are only about a mile away too, which is why i was thinking about having it done.
