Hi guys, thanks for taking the time to read this thread ...

I've been with NTL Broadband since it was launched, never had any problems regarding connection issues, upgraded from 750k to 2mb when it was launched, and has been fine, up until 2 days ago.

I play CS very heavily, and stream a lot of audio like music radio stations on shoutcast and live365. The other day, i tried streaming some stations, it took ages to connect and was buffering every 5 secs, was like WTF? i assumed it was the host of the radio station, but i tried many and still the same

So i had a peak at my modem, now normally the lights flash away happily by themselves, even when i aint doing much, but now they very rarely flash. The problems I have now in since the past 2 days are:

1.) Can't stream any audio/video
2.) Surfing most sites is awfully slow (even this forum)
3.) Cannot use newsgroups (downloads posts at 2k/sec instead of 240k/s)

I did a few speedtests, i usually use BandwidthPlace.com which i've used for years, and its showing that im at 284.8k when it would normally show approx 2000k or so ... i tried a few more tests, including the one at the NTL webspace of R.Walker or whatever it is, and im getting 310 or so on there

So, i called up Tech Support, he said no area problems, said he could connect to my modem fine, and couldnt see any problems, and basically said problem lies with my PC, i said that was BS and he's lying and also mentioned 3, that's 3 people in the same town as me also got the same problem, he put me on hold to consult somebody, and the fone hung up

So i went to BBMedic and spoke to a guy there, he again assured me of no area problems, and couldnt see a problem, even though there clearly is. Once i mentioned theres 3 or so other people with similar problems, he went quiet, and asked if i was still here lol?

I then asked him if i had been "slowed" down by NTL due to recent downloading or something, and he said he wasnt aware of any capping being done, i have changed my ip and cloned a diff MAC addy and still the problem persists

Do you guys have any suggestions on whats wrong? I havent made any changes to my PC, nor do i have any kind of spyware/virus/trojans lurking around. I am a technical support officer for a local hospital so i've done all the basic checks, and i am sure the problem is beyond my control

Here is a recent ping log of: hudd-t2core-b-ge-wan61.inet.ntl.com
------------------------------------------------------
C:\Documents and Settings\Phyber>ping 80.7.153.129 -t

Notice the constant 6-8 MS and then BOOM it jumps to 200+ for a few pings, do you think this is the problem? Also here are the results of a speedtest below:

------------------------------------------------------------------
248.4 kilobits per second
Communications 248.4 kilobits per second
Storage 30.3 kilobytes per second
1MB file download 33.8 second

^^ See how ridiculous that is

Any help or advice is appreciated guys! I hope we can resolve this, im getting fed up of the 0% support we're getting from NTL ...:td:

I take it you have done the usual round of AV, spyware and trojan sweeps just to make sure you are clean. Have you checked your power levels?

obscura2k
26-06-2005, 01:37
As said in the original post mate, i have no spyware or trojans, and have taken the basic tests, left it all off for a full day aswell ... power levels are fine ... also its happening to 3 others i know ... 3 of us all download games quite heavily, and i think we're been "slowed down" by NTL or something

PM me your current IP address please dude.

BTW don't ping core as a guide to performance, intermittently it gets a bit busy and will respond to pings a bit late.

Im up in Fixby near the ASDA, and my 2 mates are down in Mirfield ... Ignition did warn me it was a temp fix, but at least he knows what the problem is, and can sort it out hopefully

where you at? bobna, go do a speed test @ www.bandwidthplace.com (http://www.bandwidthplace.com) and tell me what you get

Hi,

Ive been with NTL for nearly 5 years now, and this is the first fault to really affect me.

On Thursday morning, my CM lost connection briefly, it was a planned outage to do some streamlining apparrently. Since then, my internet connection has gone down the pipes big time.

I noticed the problem on Friday, mainly on slow browsing, but the big problem was newsfeeds. As you can see from the reverse traceroute from my NSP, were dropping packets somewhere around the hudds area. Anyone else getting this?

BTW, I tried to call in a fault, apparrently NTL support are open seven days a week now. The recorded message says theyre closed till tomorrow :(

Yes im in Kirklees and ive been having slow speeds from friday.

I get slow speeds in daytime but max speed in early mornings which makes no sense whatsoever.

The slow speeds starts at 9am again and are still ongoing.

i rung ntl CS but they were no help as they blamed my pc and not their systems.
It's been fine until friday where it slowed right down to 10-15k/s on a 2mbit line.

Same issues here in Lindley peeps..

Slow browsing - cant get some some sites at all.. boots.com being one example, and this forum barely loads.

This started earlier in the week after the 'network upgrades' and has been an intermittent problem ever since.

Speedtest Results:

2.5 megabits per second

Communications 2.5 megabits per second
Storage 308.5 kilobytes per second

Actually don't worry too much about the above, traced to a faulty 2.5Gbps link, traffic has been rerouted through a resilient path.

EDIT: Just wondering if anyone of the people who have previously criticised ntl's obviously oversubscribed network will comment on the fact 2.5Gbps can be rerouted (actually could happily lose multiple 10Gbps links but still).

Cheers Ignition, seems like its been sorted to some extent for me too.

Less packet loss, better download speeds, more stable with less "connection lost/reset" errors. I dont know if its back to as good as it was, but its back in the "happy customer" territory :p:

This has to have been the first time Ive ever felt disappointed with NTL, which is saying a lot seeing as Ive been with them so long now. 1.5 days disappointment in 4+ years isnt a bad record :)

<snip>

Those look like traceroutes from newshosting, and look similar to mine.

If so, what download speed are you getting from them? I'm in Kirklees using Newshosting and can see 360KB/s (i.e. max bandwidth). Was having problems earlier in the week, but all seems ok now.

Also which port are you using to connect?

I reported mine and after the usual turn off, remove router, turn on, reboot PC, spin round on chair use left hand for mouse. They are sending an engineer out as mine is OK after a modem reboot for approx 30-60 minutes!!!
