Hi,
I keep getting a really slow connection with pages taking ages to load, this is the last test that I have done,

Fri, 24 Jun 2005 18:53:47 UTC
1st 128K took 5058 ms = 25914 Bytes/sec = approx 216 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 2233 ms = 58698 Bytes/sec = approx 488 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 2613 ms = 50162 Bytes/sec = approx 417 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 2484 ms = 52767 Bytes/sec = approx 439 kbits/sec

This is on a 2 meg connection with a sacm, this keeps happening sometimes 8 or more times a day, resetting the modem seems to cure it for a while but it is now getting annoying, any thoughts or help please ?

1st 128K took 3776 ms = 34712 Bytes/sec = approx 289 kbits/sec

3rd 128K took 3725 ms = 35187 Bytes/sec = approx 293 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1732 ms = 75677 Bytes/sec = approx 630 kbits/sec

Thank you for your reply, it got so bad that I had to switch everything off ! No I have not called NTL as from what I have read on this forum they will blame my equipment, here are the power readings with everything running ok after an overnight re-boot.

Downstream Receive Power Level : 6.21 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 31.69 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 39.50 dBmv

1st 128K took 540 ms = 242726 Bytes/sec = approx 2019 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 531 ms = 246840 Bytes/sec = approx 2054 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 551 ms = 237880 Bytes/sec = approx 1979 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 521 ms = 251578 Bytes/sec = approx 2093 kbits/sec
Quite a difference !!!

Gah...

If you don't phone in these things can't be sorted, and from what you've said your issue sounds like it needs an engineer visit.

Again to everyone pretty please when things go wrong report them. The reason that your own equipment may be blamed is because a lot of the faults that are phoned in are actually the customer's own PC!

Phone in, get it logged, run through the standard troubleshooting stuff, and if all checks out they'll probably arrange an engineer for you.

1st 128K took 1793 ms = 73102 Bytes/sec = approx 608 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 1882 ms = 69645 Bytes/sec = approx 579 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 1883 ms = 69608 Bytes/sec = approx 579 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 1542 ms = 85001 Bytes/sec = approx 707 kbits/sec

Downstream Receive Power Level : 5.83 dBmv
Downstream SNR : 31.73 dB
Upstream Transmit Power Level : 39.50 dBmv

Does this help, and could you please give me the freephone number to report this fault, thank you :)

rang NTL and was told by a very nice man to do a "tracert" when I had problems, my connection is poor at the moment but not as bad as it was but does this give a clue as to the root of the problem.

Obvious things for you to check on your own PC is it's not got any virus, spyware or other malware stuff accidentally loaded. Make sure you have all the latest patches. Presumably you are also not trying to run any other program especially P2P when you are doing the Tracert.

You don't say anything about your home kit. Do you have a firewall running. Is there a router (if so does the problem still occur if you disconnect it). Do you connect via USB or Ethernet (the latter can be more reliable with currrent drivers)

If youv'e got all that checked then you need to keep pestering ntl faults as something would appear to be amis on their kit.

You don't say anything about your home kit. Do you have a firewall running.Yes, but have tried turning it off

Is there a router (if so does the problem still occur if you disconnect it). Yes I have a router and have just disconnected it, will do another tracert without it.

Do you connect via USB or Ethernet (the latter can be more reliable with currrent drivers) Ethernet, but where would I get the updated drivers ?

This is better but this always happens when I turn the modem off and back on again ?

With router back on after re-setting the modem ?

Looking at the start of those traces, you seem to have a local problem - a 957ms ping to your local ubr is appalling :disturbd:

I have found out that my son is playing runescape on his computer and when I disconnect him at my own peril may I add, my access time drop dramaticaly to 7ms or there about, is there anything I can do to "throttle him" :) Thanks.
