Hi all

My wife recently had this donne (eyes -6.0 very short sighted) last Friday. Although it has improved her sight she does not think she will be able to drive. I wonder is such cases do they re sap the eyes to correct it further or will she still have to wear glasses in which case bit of a wate of money.

Does anyone have any expereince of this ???

Thanks

Mike

You would be better off asking the person who did the work on her eye to be honest. Do you know exactly what she had done?

Yes she had LASIK surgery................

Laski does not guarantee 6/6 vision, she may still need to wear glasses post op.

They may also retreat.

Healing takes time though.

Was it Lasik or Lasek she had? Lasik is more of an instant hit where the eyesight is usually at driving standard after 24/48 hours. Lasek takes a lot longer to heal and may well take several weeks to reach driving standards. With Lasek the protective outer layer on the surface of the eye is softened with alcohol and folded aside. This will cause blurring and non perfect vision whilst healing. Laser eye specialists do not usually consider additional treatment until the 6 months stage as it can take this long to heal.

I would say if she had Lasek, her eyesight at present is what you would expect it to be and will improve considerably over the next few weeks. If she had Lasik treatment I would expect for her to have reached driving standards by now. Quite often with Lasek the put a contact lens bandage on the eye for a week or so. Again sight will be much improved when this is removed.

This is what puts me off this kind of treatment, with -5.50 in one eye and -3.50 in the other i would rather just get cheap specs of the internet...

Oh, and i am squeamish!!!

Does she have a weekly check up booked, perhaps it's better than she thinks? Also I would probably give it a few more weeks to settle in.

Driving vision is a very low standard, 20/30 I believe, or 6/9 if you can do that metric thing. Which basically means you can see at 20 feet what an average sighted person can see at 30 feet. So not that good really. 20/20 vision is just average really.
After about 2 years of research, I went for the Lasik earlier this year. Within a day I was at driving standard, which I found to be very poor vision and quite scary that it's all you need to drive. At my weekly check up I had gone to 20/20 vision which i didn't find that fantastic. At my monthy checkup I felt I had reached the standard of vision I had before the op using glasses. My vision had gone to 20/10, which means I can see at 20 feet what an average person can see at 10, so extremely good vision.

I would not have been happy if I ended up at only driving standard, I don't think I would have been happy at getting only 20/20 vision!!

I think what I really mean to say in an extremely long winded way is........ she should wait a while and see!!

Please please please anyone who is thinking of having laser surgery on their eyes please think again. A work colleague had it done and ended up worse than what he was before, his eyes were a right mess.

i've thought about having this done by i don't have a spare set of eyes.. if it goes wrong then you can't change your eyes

also no one has had this done 30 or 40 years ago we don't know what will happen later in life and i plan to live a long time at 27 i don't want to loose my eyesight for ever

I am more thinking about specssavers and other shops are they to care for my eyes or just to sell glasses.

I spoke to a ex opticion who said a good way to improve ones own eyesight is to wear weaker glasses and train you eyes to work harder, as the muscles can get weak. Hence if you squint you see better as your making the muscle contract hence better viewing.

Making a muscle work harder makes it fatigue quicker so I'm not sure about the benefits of this, but it is certainly open to debate, it may be more beneficial if you are long sighted as short sightedness can be caused by muscles that are too strong (from constantly tensing to bring short focus to the eye).

What exactly was his complication?

He was long sighted he saw an advert in the Sun newspaper he decided to go to Nottingham to have it done, after surgery he was ok for 2 weeks then he started getting little white spots on his eyes, he went back to the clinic where he had it done to ask them what the problem was, they couldn't solve the problem, he went to his optician who had a right go at him for not consulting him first, he said laser eye surgery may look a minor job it isn't. His optician sorted him out with a new pair of glasses, he gave him an appointment for the hospital to see a eye surgeon, the surgeon gave him some solution to see if his eyes cleared, it did the trick but his sight reverted back to what it was before surgery.

It isnt suitable for everyone. Paul wants his doing, but it is a costly procedure if it doesnt go right. But good m8, I hope it works out for you.

MMMmmm

I've said it before and (once again :)) I'll say it again.

There is no way I'd EVER have any kind of laser treatment on my eyes unless (as in my case - not optimax but something different) I HAD TO.

the thing is you don't have to go to these clinic places that are all over the country.. you can go to places like Morefields eye hostpital in London who are a proper hostpital and have it done

as i said before i don't have a spare pair of eyes and don't know what will happen when i reach 40 or 50

also sometimes you become long or short sighted because the muscles have become weaker as you get older so your eyes can still get worse over the course of time

Your eyes detorate naturally with age anyway, as you get older they revert back to baby sight, so yes it may be a solution now but your eyes will still detorate in later life, no eye surgery is 100% proof, if done correctly yes, it can restore some of the vision but not all.

But good m8, I hope it works out for you.Tell him to search on google for sands of sahara, GASH (Glare, Arcs, Starbursts, Halo), dry eye, the risk that the only available correction will hard contact lenses if problems arise, the fact that you are having two procedures (one on each eye) so when they quote stats at you you have to half the number (e.g. one in 100 procedures requires further corrective work = 1/50 patients).

Then think about it.
