I'm not sure which kinks you're referring to, but the one that niggled me the most when I bought a PS2 was the dvd player.

I'm under the assumption that dvd player is still cr@p with the original version, but it could possibly be working properly with the silver one. Mind you I assume its the same remote and s/w for the black one as the silver and I wasn't certain that the dvd player problem was the dvd remote, s/w, or the drive.

In all honesty I couldn't care about the dvd player in my ps2, because I have plenty of dvd players.

Fair enuff, i might get a PS2 Silver so I can play PES3 but I gotta find a shop that bundles it first. Apparently there was problem with the laser reading blue/green discs or summat like that ?

I'm thinking of replacing the kids' original Playstation with a new PS2 in silver. The main reasons are:

1. Will play the existing PS1 games
2. Goes with with silver Sony TV
3, Plays DVDs and keeps kids away from me when they are watching a DVD:)

Can anyone tell me:

1. Can they play R1 dvds?
2. PS2 dvd performance is often described as "crap" can anyone elaborate? As long as a reasonable picture and sound is fed to the 21in 4:3 mono Sony TV it doesn't have to be brilliant quality.

Any comments much appreciated.

PS2s cant play R1 DVDs without an addon called region x.
The dvd playbacks pretty good, but the silver ones do have more up to date drivers than my one so i cant comment too much

Yeah, I'm afraid a lot of things are more expensive in Europe than Canada, but then we don't have a comparitively weak currency, even if the Canadian dollar has made ground on the US dollar (but then who hasn't these days?) :D

With Games?

The £150 is with two controllers, an 8Mb card and two games (I think) lets make sure this is apples and apples (or PS2s and PS2s)

C'est la vie! We will have to console(!) ourselves with . . . . er PAL is higher res than NTSC.

Anyway, I have one now and when I can tear the kids away from the Simpsons game I'll try out the DVD performance.

Problem I had with my PS2 playing DVD's was that it would always assume I have a widescreen TV. Just couldn't get it to realise I had a 4:3. Works fine now I got a widescreen TV but would always stretch images on my 4:3.

Yep. That problem still exists, but luckily my TV has 16:9 mode so I can display anamorphic ws properly.

I did notice that the DVD sound was very quiet and had to turn the volume up a lot.

THE game to have at the moment is Prince Of Persia: sands of time. An absolutely brilliant game IMO. Another favourite (although I've still to take the wrapper of this game) is Beyond Good & Evil.
Another game I would recommend if you like RPG style games is Dark Chronicle, a boss game. :) There's also the GTA double pack out now, if you like the 'more mature' game experience.

You must be joking, I returned my copy to GAME 3 hours later. It is a shockingly bad game on any format. I tried it on the PC just to be sure and I am sure.
