A quote from the "Good summer; Bad winter" thread:

"I like snow and crisp cold."

Now (wandering wildly from the subject), according to the famous carol:

"When a poor man came in sight,
Gath'ring winter fuel."

After which which the page says:

"Sire, he lives a good league hence,
Underneath the mountain;
Right against the forest fence,
By Saint Agnes' fountain."

Really? This peasant lives next to a dirty-great forest, yet he staggers miles through eyebrow-deep snow to find the odd twig. I think not, somehow!

To meet any criticism head on, I believe that 'forest fence' refers to the edge of the forest, rather than a physical fence around the forest.

It's not unlikely that the forest was the private property of some local baron, who would have had the peasant hung from the nearest lofty bough if he had caught him stealing 'his' wood...

i think the word "fuel" comes a few hundred years after wenceslas seeing as the only "fuel" they had then was wood

I've got to admit that it sounds more modern than my dimly remembered childhood carol of "When shepherds washed their socks by night."
