Hi all,

I've recently (last Saturday) been upgraded tot the new silver set top box and since then I have been unable to connect to an external SQL server site that I use for an animal sanctuary registration site. I had this problem a few months ago and had to get a seperate adsl connection from Nildram then suddenly the problem disappeared so I dropped the Nildram.

Anyone any help? All was fine until the new box arrived!

Does the sql site have a firewall - if so, is your current ip address (which will have changed) allowed access ?

(btw, I can't see an MS SQL server on either of those sites, is it on a different ip ?)

Paul,

The site that hosts all my internet sites is Protecweb. They do not have a firewall as far as I am aware since I have accessed them from different ip adresses without needing to register. I will email them though and check.

www.animal-sanctuaries.co.uk (http://www.animal-sanctuaries.co.uk) has a sql db that is used to generate the list of sanctuaries that are of a particular type. www.scholshealthandsafety.co.uk (http://www.scholshealthandsafety.co.uk) does not need a database.

URL in the top post is outbind://16-0000000012F4499A268C344C8D0E4F94BC961B3A64298100/www.animal-sanctuaries.co.uk
so that be part of the reason, both sites seemed to be working fine and the database worked when I looked at the centers list on the sanctuary site
As to Borked there are two O's in school ;) The last URL in your previous post is mis spelled lol

First can you please edit you signature to 4 lins max, thanks.

Paul,

Is the signature below ok? - btw - I'm having to cut n paste even though I've set my sig up - how do I get it to enter automatically - Ican't seem to find an option box anyway - I assume there is one.

I'm trying to connect via Enterprise Manager as I always have done.

Is the signature below ok?Yes. :)

I'm trying to connect via Enterprise Manager as I always have done.I have tried to connect to www.animal-sanctuaries.co.uk on the standard ms sql port from three different sources and none can connect - either it's dead, it's firewall protected, or it's on a different address/ip.

Paul,

The sql db is not named the same as the su=ite, nor is it a part of the site directly. I can give you the detail but would prefer not to do so over an open forum message. Is there a way I can contact you directly?

Terry,

:welcome: to Cable Forum.

If you click on Paul's name in the top left of his posts a drop-down menu will appear.

Select "Send a private message to Paul M". This will send a message directly to Paul. These messages are only readable by the intended recipient.

I got your pm, and I can connect to your server fine.

From a command prompt, can to type ;

telnet <server> 1433

and press enter (putting in the server name you sent me).

then try ;

telnet 195.82.99.16 1433

and press enter - this is not an sql server, but just a dummy program listening on the same port - you should be able to connect, and then get dropped.

telnet <server> 1433 - I got "Could not open connection to the host on port 1433: connection failed"

telnet 195.82.99.16 1433 - I got "Could not open connection to the host on port 1433: connection failed"

so something is obviously blocking my connection and the only thing that has changed is the new pretty silver box from Samsung!!!!!

Do you have a firewall on your PC?

Paul (or anybody) is it possible that the new box has a different IP configuration (internally) to the old one (ie. has the local host address changed?).

The reason I ask is that it is possible that something locally is blocking your outbound connection to the modem.

I know that I sometimes have problems accessing the modem's setup/diagnostic page if I forget to add it to the trusted zone in my firewall.

For reference (if it helps at all) I can get a connection on both of the telnet connections that Paul gave.

Make sure any local firewalls are off (inc xp's). I am currently trying to find out how ntl's port blocking works for STB customers, as that is another possibility.

Paul,

Thanks for that - I'm on to NTL as I type and struggling.

Yep, as I thought - hence why I asked our ntl bods how the STB blocking worked - I suspected it could not do incoming only, like the SACM's. :)
