I am suffering from Tennis/golfers elbow.

I spoke to Ramrod who recommended one of these

http://www.powerballs.co.uk/index.php

Got it today ....

You can really feel it working, but for those others out there that have them, what is the highest spin you have recorded.

I have just got 9989, and my arms are aching ... LOL

Apparently so ....

Must admit though .... it really seems to hit the "Tennis Elbow" spot ...

I'm sure there are others who have suffered with this ... it's bloody painful. :(

my left wrist is quite sore, due to excessive 'mousing' - I try to use my right hand at work & the left at home, in order to spread the load, but the left has been working harder, lately - it might be worth giving one of those a go, it certainly looks good - thanks for the info Si (and Ramrod ) :tu:

I used to find that my wrist got quite sore (waits for Nugget to join the thread.. :) ) what with all the mousing I did, but then I moved over to a tracker ball, which has helped no end - I've been using one for about 4 years now, and don't have any dull aches in my wrist anymore

I have thought about that - however the thing I liked about the description of the powerball, was that as well as being therapeutic, it also strengthens the joints, etc, thereby helping to prevent re-occurance.

Thanks, though :tu:

About 75% of the posts in this thread were off topic. I have therefore done some serious pruning. Can we try to keep our threads on topic please, everybody is free to start a new thread to discuss ... well, whatever you want really. There's no need to hijack existing ones. :)

Just ordered 2 neon jobbies, one for me and one for my brother... I'm hoping to improve strength for basketball, whereas my brother is into rock climbing and mountain biking both of which would be prime targets for this product... I'll let you lot know how we get on.

Obviously, competing against my brother for a highscore will be a vastly secondary reason for buying these ;) :D

ever tried holding a bicyle wheel, while it is spinning, and trying to move it out of the plane of motion - it is very difficult, the gyroscopic effect resists being 'precessed' - these resist motion in the same way.

Well I've just bought one, hopefully it'll help help with my RSI. I went for the Blue 250Hz Pro, since the ones with neon lights apparently don't quite reach 15000rpm due to the extra luggage... not that I'll ever get that high!

Cost ~£28 altogether with priority shipping, which is worth it in my opinion since they'll provide replacements for any parts for free, or even fix it for you if it gets damaged. I've heard that their support is excellent, which is kinda believable considering their in-depth FAQ.

I'm intrigued by suggestions that the ones with lights in them max out at less than 15,000 rpm. Do the standard ones have an upper limit? If they do, the 'competition' element isn't going to last very long!

i'd imagine the upper limit would the first resonant frequency, which is determined by the manufacturing accuracy. They're guranteed to be OK up to 250Hz, but after that you'll probably find a 'normal distribution' of manufacturing accuracy.

in other words, any powerball will get up to 15,000rpm wthout a problem. at an unspecified speed after that, performance may be down to pot luck!

I'll have a no holds barred attempt at home later on :DI wouldn't...........you might make something go 'ping' in your forearm. Build the intensity up slowly over about a week or you may do more harm than good and have to lay off using much it for weeks :nono:
If you overstress an area of your body the weakest bit of it is liable to be the first to be further injured.

If you look at my posts, I never made any claim (serious ones anyway), only ridiculed you ;) Yeah, right ;) :D

Got any other tips?Well the guy in that vid switched the ball into his dominant hand after already getting it spinning quite fast in the other one first..........that seems to work.
In order to get a high score you need warmed up forearm muscles that haven't been previously/recently knackered (obviously)
I find that I get my fastest score of the day in the mid morning after I have spun the ball (not too vigorously) about 5 mins previously(for about 10 seconds). Muscle contraction firstly uses locally stored glycogen (already in the muscle) which is depleted in 30 seconds or less.........you have to achieve the high score in as fast a time as possible.....before you burn up the local glycogen and/or produce too much lactic acid in the muscle. The glycogen takes hours to replace so once you have 'gone for it' it is unlikely that you will be able to match that score for several hours.

Not really - s1lv3r did specifically say that the other thread is for highscores, whereas this one is for discussion of the powerball itself.

Jon M
27-05-2005, 14:34
true, brings up the point about consistency being applied to threads again.

should have been merged ages agoLooks like neither you, or Graham bothered to read the highscore thread, where I specifically wanted the highscores to remain uncluttered by random posts.
Secondly, it has already had the watchful eye of Chris T over it, surely any issue with merging would have been highlighted by him when he looked at it. I take his in-action in that sense as a sign of approval to be honest.

In general, I think this thread is an exception to the rule, as personally I'm very much in favour of keeping thread numbers to a minimum.

However, I have seen many instances on other forums where an information thread and a discussion thread are kept seperate, which can work very effectively.
I don't think we need to address policy, and as normal members, it's not our job to do so, unless mods specifically ask for our input.

It's been done to death elsewhere, why waste time and effort stirring it up again when it's not going to change anything.

Chris
27-05-2005, 14:42
I can't help thinking this discussion wouldn't be happening if we had not decided to publish our 'gentle reminder' thread this week. :dozey:

The Powerball Highscores thread will remain, for exactly the same reason we don't insist on using the same thread every time someone feels like running a quiz: posts would get lost or confused otherwise. The highscores thread contains absolutely nothing but the current best score by a CF member, where it can easily be referred to and where a new highscore can easily be seen.

Now, given that we are on an on-topic drive this week, can we please stop grumbling about this. If anyone has a serious gripe they can PM any of the team. I will be deleting any further off-topic posts from this thread. :)

It's pretty darn good. I used it for around 20 minutes in each hand yesterday, at about 4000-5000rpm and it sorted them out a bit (I have a little RSI). The random shooting pains went away quite a bit, my wrists have hardly clicked, and the only pain I felt the next morning was muscle ache! I'm really impressed, who would've thought that infomercial website was telling the truth.

My top RPM was a bit over 9000. At that point I find it hard to keep up with the momentum, and it feels like it's gonna slip out of your hands.

Top stuff.

I do 15 minutes in each hand every day. My mate tried to do it and was hopeless, he even managed to cut his hand by whipping himself when pulling the coil out.

For the musicians amongst you (or those with good ears), if you find it a little boring doing the exercise everyday, trying doing it to music. Since the pitch of the sound the Powerball makes changes, you can try to keep it at a certain key. For example, the song 'Drop The Pressure' by Mylo requires that you keep the Powerball at around 5000rpm to match the key.

A little sad, I know, but it helps. :P

I got two cords, and nearly lost one within minutes when I twanged it right across the lounge. Found it, but an hour later it lost one of its plastic ends. :erm: I'm wondering whether pulling the string at 90° to the ball rather than across the face of it would be less likely to cause damage.

Haven't read the full thread, but I managed around 11960 at one point. And kept beating it bit by bit. My final score was around 12500. Slow progress was being made, until my mate at work sprayed WD40 into it because he couldn't get the rhythm. =[ Gutted. Top speed went to about 2500.

I trust your 'mate' bought you a new one! :erm:

My top speed is now 10,700.

I managed 10822 tonight & was quite chuffed with that - I'm finding the limiting factor, at the moment, is my hands need to be stronger to hang on to it when it starts really winding up ;)

Thing is - i dont get it - because yesterday i was struggling to hit 10,000 today i romped 11,000 but im doing nothing different really.

I *think* the secret is in building up the spin but then waiting until its caught up with the rotation of your hand then upping a gear and waiting again.

But to be honest - i probably just fluked it :p:

I overdid it when i got it Wednesday, I showed it to people at work & had a few more goes when I got home - and then a few more later on ... never got more than 9800..

Yesterday my hands were pretty sore, no blisters, just a couple of bruises ;), but I managed to get just over 10K, then left it alone :)

Today I've just had one go on each hand - but managed nearly 11K - I think you are right that technique is as important as strength.

I wonder whether Ramrod took his one on holiday :D

thats gonna be a big cleaning job if you want it to work well again!

although it might get a tad better if you leave it in an airing cupboard for a few days, or somewhere else warm enough to dry out the lubricant...

Evening chaps. I caught the thread in our site stats and wanted to thank you for this much valued enthusiasm for our products - it is greatly appreciated.

There were a couple of queries in some of the earlier posts that I wanted to answer if you didn't mind;

1. We have just returned from a week demonstrating Powerball in Hamleys, London and had Akis, our World Champion Powerballer there with us for the Friday and Saturday. Interestingly enough, his presence proved that the current generation of Neon models are running about as fast as the 250Hz models; Akis hit 15350rpm on one of the demo Neons (which itself had received a fair bashing over the previous days, but was none the worse for wear) but could only manage around 15021rpm on his own personal 250Hz Powerball (the same one on which he performed the 15552rpm world record a couple of months back) - this should address your own concerns about the 250Hz being quicker than the Neon...it doesn't appear to be the case anymore.

2. If any of you lose your starting cords, then please just send us an email (info@powerballs.com) with your name and preferred delivery address and we'll bang off a couple of spares.

3. If anyone requires a wrist strap (and they really do help prevent those drops which will make the little guy knock for a while) - then please just forward your name and address to the same email and we'll whip one over to you.

There will be no charge for either service - please just accept it as a small token of our sincere appreciation for spreading the good word about this exciting product.

Finally - any questions about how to keep your new purchase in tip top shape, just mail us and we'll do our best to answer your query promptly.

Thanking you once again for your valued consideration and with our kind regards, Rory

Thank you for these kind (head swelling!) words guys.

I note some email requests for the cords/straps and will have the girls send them out later this afternoon - it was a bank holiday here yesterday so we are just playing catch up for the next few hours with regards to correspondence.

Just a quick note about tennis elbow/RSI etc.

Your Powerball has been medically approved as a superb rehabilitation device to help combat these symptoms (and it does it in a very fast, efficient manner if the unprompted feedback we receive from [former] sufferers is anything to go by).

However, I want to point out that if you are going to use it for rehabilitation purposes, then you should do so at a slow but steady pace from the onset and avoid spinning at speeds in excess of 6000rpm until your limbs become accustomed to what is essentially a completely different workout to what you may ever have experienced in the past (regardless of how often you might visit the gym and use machines/free weights).

We also recommend that in such instances you carry out some simple warm up exercises and stretches before spinning the ball at a max of 5000/6000rpm (higher speeds will lead to a more strengthened muscle but also a less flexible muscle, therefore potentially making the injury worse - in truth, there is no point trying to strengthen a muscle when it contains recent scar tissue due to RSI, for example, as the scar tissue isn't there to be strengthened and will simply break).

Once you have used the ball at such speeds for perhaps 14 days, not only will you find that your condition has significantly improved, but you will also now be in a position to begin increasing those spin speeds to a more respectable level...7000...8000...9000+ in short bursts of 20/30 seconds.

As with any exercise product of course, if in doubt have a quick consult with your doctor before use.

Thank you all once again for this much appreciated enthusiasm.

With kind regards, Rory

Chris

I guess that's another benefit - develop hand-eye co-ordination in the young. All that stuff about child development - keep their brains stimulated.

You are correct on both points guys - Play are based in Jersey and don't charge Vat on purchases - in addition, they buy and move big qty's of the products they sell and therefore appear to operate a discount [business] model (larger sales volumes at lower margins).

In terms of Powerball as a 'Toy', I asked myself the same question when I found myself in Hamley's last week surrounded by at least 100 kiddies from the minute the store opened to the minute it closed (my god, what a busy place that is during half term!) - in truth, Powerball isn't really a 'Toy' (anyone who has experienced the torture it inflicts on the wrist/arms will testify to this) but that high score feature (as you can even see in this thread) is wildly addictive and manages to blur the line between fitness and fun sufficiently to put it into the fun/games category of such sales channels without too much dispute..

By the way, have a little peep at the following "mini scoreboard" we set up for our friends at the Flexifoil kite flying forum:

http://www.powerballs.com/flexifoil/

As you can see, this is the type of scoring that you boys should be aiming to achieve (the official Top100 scoreboard is outside of most peoples reach these days so don't feel too bad if you can't quite make that!)

Anything less than 11k for a fully grown male is fairly miserable (!) and it will annoy you even more when you hear that a very slender wristed young Spanish girl called Mj (she is about 18, as thin as a whip and with slim arms) is presently on 11783rpm and headed for our first female 12k score submission...we'll have some fun when that happens and will make sure the video is on site to help make any potential slagging of limp wristed males even easier! :-)

Watch this space!

BR Rory

There is information on their site regarding RSI, and hand/wrist injuries. Yes it is good for this, but take it slow.
