I have an old compaq which I have set up as a dedicated firewall using IPcop. I have a cat5E crossover connecting my xpbox to the ipcopbox. The ipcop has 2 Nic cards, one for Green/safe zone and one for Red/internet. I'm using a straight through cat 5 cable to connect the cable modem to the compaq box and a crossover cable to connect the xpbox to the ipcop box.

However, when I try and connect to the net it is getting the 169.254 scenario. How can I rectify this and obtain an IP address using the Red nic card instead of using the nic card in my PC? I have followed all the suggestions of reregistering a new nic card etc but this doesn't work. The nic for the red zone has already been registered in the xpbox and is working fine!

I'm also using a cable modem stand alone. I can register the nIcs on problem in the xp box, but when I try to connect to the net through ipcop, I get 169.254.

Have you read through
http://thoughtattic.com/security/MakeYourOwnRouter.html ?
I'm taking it for granted that you have powered the SACM down, powered off all PCs, powered up SACM, leave so that all lights stabilise, power up PCs, open browser.

go into DOS and the the following:

net stop dhcp
then after that net start DHCP see if that gives you a proper ip addy

I tried the stop/start dhcp, but it keeps going back to 169.254.

Any other ideas?

try refreshing the tcp/ip by way of the netsh command

cheers steggs, but that didn't work either, it just says DHCP already enabled!
