I have 2MB broadband via a Samsung STB.
When it was upgraded to 2MB I had a great 2MB service and all the tests I did confirmed the speed.

Recently I have noticed the speed has got worse and worse, so much so these are the type of figures I am getting now :-

Sat, 16 Apr 2005 21:49:09 GMT
1st 128K took 3659 ms = 35822 Bytes/sec = approx 298 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 6582 ms = 19914 Bytes/sec = approx 166 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 3712 ms = 35310 Bytes/sec = approx 294 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 3539 ms = 37036 Bytes/sec = approx 308 kbits/sec

They are really poor for a 2MB service.

I have reset / rebooted the STB but it has made no difference.
The STB is showing the right service level of stb-mid (2MB) and NTL tell me that I have the correct service set at their end, but it is still rubbish.

Anyone have any ideas?

I am have a Mac running OS X, but I don't see how that would be affecting the poor download speeds, as it was working great 1 week ago.

If a passing mod (with your permission) could supply me with your IP address be happy to see what I can do with it.

I know it's a cack and MI5 like way to go about things but thanks to a flood of PMs and the odd email about 'postcode xxxx xxx last night went offline for an hour, what happened?' I'm not the easiest person to reach right now.

Always the few that spoil it for the many...... :(
You helped me out a few times and for that I am greatful. Just hope all the abusers don't put you off helping other people....

Hi, I still have the problem with poor web surfing speeds, pages seems to take an age to come up, and it is not a problem with the computer as far as I can see as other machines like mine have no issues.

It really feels like I am on a fast dial-up line rather than a 2MB line.

Email me at idparkinson@yahoo.co.uk

i've had luck too !

i've called ntl today to cancel all my services..... they have offered me quite a substantial credit to my broadband account if i stay with them and said i would get a call back by their senior technican tonight to talk it through.....
i've still cancelled my t.v and phone service and i'm moving to sky and bt but if they can sort my internet tonight then i might hang around for a little while longer.

it's just soooooo bloody frustrating !!!!! :Yikes:

Hi,

I wonder if anyone can help, before I resort to ntl's helpdesk.

I upgraded to 2MB service on 5th April (Samsung STB), and for first week I was quite pleased with the service. However in the last week or so I've noticed a slow down in speed.

After seeing this thread I ran a speed-test, below, and it confirmed problems with download speeds.

Rather than getting stuck on the phone I was wondering if some nice person could give any pointers.

Using XP connect to a router which is connected to the STB. No other PC's accessing the router when test was run.

cheers

Do you get better tests if you remove the router from the equation?

What STB do you have?

Do you have any other software running that might be connected to the internet?

Not tried, the router's been there for ages. Will check at some stage, but I think it's okay..

What STB do you have?

New Samsung

Do you have any other software running that might be connected to the internet?

No other software running when speed test done.

Cheers
