Thanks, for your replies....
On the VW polo 1997 mod, can the linkage on the gear change
be lubricated, without taken it into a garage ??

NO it hs to be taken to the garage I am sorry to say. It is like when the cylnder head gasket went on the car on Sunday, we were going to do it, untill we saw the mess it had made. Trust me, if you go to a garage and if anything goes wrong it is their responsiblity to fix it, where as if you have a go and screw it up it is only yourself to blame!!!

Don`t see why you have to take it to a garage for that!!!
Just get underneath it with a tin of LM Grease and get your hands dirty mate!:D
Its not an internal component and its certainly not as user unfriendly as doing a head gasket.

And yours to pay

and i would be very surprised to find user serviceable parts ;) , more likely it would be sealed for life bearings/stroke linkages that are not user serviceable , unless the user wants to replace them and then may find that the car cannot be put into gear properly :(

Find a copy of the appropriate Haynes manual - it will tell you if & how.
Halfords often stock them - sometimes they've even got a copy open - or try the library.

My question would be - why do you want to?

I assume you're having gear-change problems and are hoping this will fix it?

I'd imagine that you can probably get to a number of the external moving parts on the engine/block, but I doubt lubricating them will make a lot of difference. Sometimes the problem is simply with the pedal - have a look under the dash.

But, if you were to describe any problem you may have, one of us might be better able to help.

I remember when I laid up my Xantia for a month or so the gearchange was very stiff, popped the bonnet and doused the gear linkage with WD40.

Case solved.

Don`t forget that nowadays, Main dealers charge upwards of £60.00 + VAT as an hourly rate!!! I don`t know what we charge ( Honda Dealership) but it must be close to that!

The local dealer charged me £106 per hour inc VAT. A small service (oil change and tick some boxes on a checksheet) came to nearly £300! And they offered to replace a pedal rubber for £42... kind people.

Well I was gong on my own experience - the two Audis I have owned only needed the regular servicing, no other repairs. On the other hand, the only BMW I owned was a nightmare! :Yikes:

Really? I have done a lot of miles and had no probs; the same goes for about 4 people I know who own or have owned them.

Personally I would recommend them to anyone. But beware, it is a very addictive car!
