unless you are on a ISDN connection or internal phone network, your telephone line is analgue...

I'd say its a very, very good chance it is an analogue connection.

ISDN is digital, PTSN is analogue and the type 99% or so of houses will have.

An ordinary analogue phone will have a plug like this:

An ISDN digital phone will have a connector like this:

Ignore the colours - concentrate on the shape.

No. The MP390 requires an analogue phone line.

1) check the phone socket using an ordinary phone

2) check you've enabled the fax function on the MP390. I have a little experience of a similar Brother machine and it wasn't simple to work this out.

3) try the fax in the other direction

i have already tried these

in this machine i bought bt adpter seperately
becos , this machine has two port which are for answermachine and other for socket, my answer machine has analog port, but fax machine has isdn port, so i sort it out by using the bt adpter

The socket on the MP390 is more likely to be an RJ11 like this:

I'd try a different lead. There are several different wiring patterns available.

Is there any information in the manual about which pins it uses?

This is a Group 3 fax, that is analogue. ISDN faxes are Group 4.

But emulate G3 easily. My home fax is an ISDN card in my PC connected to the digital ISDN line, an analogue fax can call it though.
