All ATI are doing is selling MS licences to use their patents!...well ATI are getting another company to make the chips...etc..

Ah! I get ya!!
Kind of like with the GC its NEC that makes the chip, not ati, it just uses ATi/ARTx tech.

well I'm not a fan of ATI, and I doubt that thye can bring anything new that Nvidia couldnt have.
I think its a shame because Nvidia give out a lot more support to developers than ATI do.

I cant help but feel that this may cause problems for XB2.

I gather it causes a problem though. It means that the new card might have to emulate the old one with software to get the older games to work and thus ensure backwards compatibility ... maybe.

Nige.

How about the zillions of Xbox1 owners!

Who will likely sell off thier xbox1 to get an xbox2.

Being backward compatable is a MUST if MS want people to upgrade to them.

Must agree with that. Backwards compatibility is a must especially when the PS3 will have two-gen backwards compatibility.

I also agree that backwards compatibility, which may or may not be a problem depending on how games are written, will be a key requirement for the next X-Box. I don't personally have access to the XDK, but I'd imagine that the graphics programming is done against a variant of Direct3D 8.x, tweaked specifically for the nVidia chip's capabilities. In theory compatibility should be straightforward since it's essentially just Direct3D, however there could be some nVidia-specific tweaks that might not translate well to other chips. I'd like to think that both ATI and MS will make sure that original X-Box titles "work" on the next generation console.
