View Full Version : (BY 4mbit) Upload via FTP causing mad CPU USAGE

Afternoon,

I'm having a problem when using any ftp based software for uploading. I've had this problem I think now for 2 months, I'll try an explain as much as I can and hopefully someone can help me out.

I've tried FlashFXP, RushFTP, UltraFXP for uploading files, and I've used SERV-U FTP Server and BPFTP Server to allow users to download files.

The Problem
Whenever I'm uploading a file either through me sending via ftp software or someone using my ftp server after approx 30 seconds my CPU usage hits 99% and stays there until the transfer has completed.

I have also noticed that the apps show crazy upload speeds, sometimes 2000k/sec, if only that was the case!

Since this problem started I've purchased a totally new pc and had a fresh os install of WinXP SP2. I'm now running an Athlon 64 2800+, Asus K8V Deluxe Mobo, 1gb Kingston DDR PC3200 Ram. So I know it's not hardware related.

I can send the exact same files using various other methods, i.e. MSN Messenger, mIRC and Outlook Express and none of these methods cause me any problems.

The standard Windows Firewall is disabled and I'm using Zone Alarm Security Suite (the latest version).

My modem is the Motorola SB4200 and is connected via Ethernet to a 1 gigabit marvel adaptor.

I'm also on the 4mbit connection. I "think" I have only had this problem since I was upgraded from 3mbit. I do remember shortly after switching to 4mbit I had a problem where everything came to a standstill. I spoke to BY support and after a while I was told they were swapping me other to another exchange/line and within 30 seconds I was back up to speed. Whether that has any relevance I don't know (I'm still waiting for a reply from BY).

I have ZERO problems when downloading, all the above mentioned apps function perfectly with minimal CPU usage.

Any ideas anyonehttp://www.by-users.co.uk/forums/YaBBImages/huh.gif

Ticket number 7519741 (High CPU Utilisation)

http://www.blueyonder.co.uk/blueyonder/GetStatusTicketAction.do?ticket=7519741

Is that them or me (although I'm in Sheffield) !!

Could be a similar problem or am I just dreaming?

Maybe it could be the Windows TCP/IP stack dieing through the upload bandwidth being overloaded? Just a thought?

How do I go about resolving/checking that?

sounds O/S related;

- try a different computer
- try booting an alternative OS from cd: http://www.knoppix.org/
- try start > run... > cmd > ftp --help , and read up on using this very basic ftp prog
- try a another different ftp client; like ws-ftp

I've tried a different computer (I got a brand new one 8 days ago), also tried a re-install of the o/s and different ftp software.

Still the same :(

Try this,
Goto Start->Control Panel->Network Connections->(Your Connection).

In the general tab at the top click the Configure button, in there click the Advanced tab and look for something which says "optimise for" or similar and select "CPU", then click OK until your back in windows.

You might need to reboot - then try again.

Does the option exist as I can't find it on either my home or work pc?

I can't see how it can be this though, especially on 2 diff hardware setups, it suddenly changed one day (if I could remember exactly when I'd have more idea of the cause). I know since I remember the problem starting I've had multiple zone alarm updates (but I've tried it without zone alarm running) and a fresh install of XP (twice actually, once on my old hardware and again on my new hardware).

I'm as confused as hell !!

It doesn't help when Blueyonder support are no help either, to my phone calls (30 min queue and still no answer) or my emails (3 sent 0 replies).

It does unfortunately depend on your driver, it may be under a different setting for you, but then again it may not exist at all i suppose.
