It probably looks like the 100 and 200, the internals having a slightly more up to data chip. I mean what was the difference between the 100 and 200 colour coded plugs on the back.

Beats me why someone would pay £40 for a modem that's not registered on NTL's network! Sounds like the seller has got a good deal !!

I am guessing you have never used telnet to alter the MAC address of the cable modem to a already regestered ntl customour to defraud ntl out of free 1.5mb internet?.

as if I would do that:angel: ...

The reason for sale and how it was acquired look a little dubious.my contract was less than a week from ending and i asked for a replacement modem, they complied the contract ended when it should have and i got a new modem, by the time this one arrived the contract had 1 day left so didnt even get installed, the old modem was taken by ntl and this one is now my property as ntl stipulate that at end of contract item belongs to customer.

I don't think thats anyones understandin gof the T&Cs. NTL retain rights to all hardware (and cables) on your property, with CMs they ususally don't bother collecting them due to thier low value. I guess his busted one was collected when they swapped it for this 250 model, but if he is out of contract and NTL don't want to collect it then there is no reason he cannot sell it.

You mean it's authorised on the basis of a MAC address that can be changed  Don't these things have a fixed serial number?

Somewhat more complicated than that.

Let's hope you haven't done it, I'll be checking your records for the past 3 years just to make sure though.

The seller refered to it as never installed. My assumption (could be mistaken) that the modem isn't registered on the NTL network until it's installed!

I e-mailed ntl's PR department a week ago asking for a picture to go with our news item on it's launch - I got zero response (pretty much as expected).

Change the mac address and get your ass kicked by ntl, trust me it won't be long before they realise, although they did forget to bill me from september till january.
