View Full Version : Messenger, TeamSpeak etc will not connect (Tamworth / Lichfield issues ?)

..although any one else for the same service/server has no problem?!?!

MSN messenger won't sign in on either of my account, on either PC's, TeamSpeak won't connect to ANY servers (it just times out) and the client for the e0n project on both PC's keeps timing out for about 40 seconds :(

Any clues to what is going on? :(

EDIT: Also, my average download speed is 25kb/s, which it's usually 35kb/s.

Remove router and try again

You may be experiencing packet loss.

Open command prompt (the dos mini program in windows) and type:

tracert www.google.co.uk (http://www.google.co.uk)

If you get any ***'s then you have packet loss, either a problem with a router, firewall or NAT or actual connection to NTL

On the 9th hope and up it's just *'s.

Will plug PC straight into the modem now.

Just to back up the google servers so anyone can't say it's a problem with that, I just did a full tracert exactly the same as above and have no packet loss at all.

Make sure you do a reboot of your modem too.

k, but at least you have now ruled out problems with your kit.

Change the proxy .... see if it helps ?

I've rebooted the modem AND router, still got the problem :(

Not even using one.

IanGuy

The proxy may be automated, but it is still a proxy, try changing to another manually.

Yes you are ;)

But none of the settings on this system report I'm using one :erm:

Nemesis
22-02-2005, 17:33
You're using the default ntl one .... there's an article about changing proxies in the article section

IanGuy
22-02-2005, 17:35
Because it's automatically set by the DHCP, you haven't set manually. The settings on the system will only report a proxy if manually entered.
Just enter a proxy server different to the one above and then close whatever browser you are using and reopen and try again.

In past experience, I have had alot of packet loss in my area and is usually caused by a fault of NTL's in the area. Usually by the end of the week everything is perfect again, but don't hold me to that.

Proxy servers only handle http (Port 80) traffic. They have no bearing on MSN (port 1863) or teamspeak (no idea what port that uses).

That's what I thought.

Even setting up the proxy in MSN messenger just does the same thing, but quicker.

It's most likely an area fault, phone CS, if they say they will send an engineer out in a week's time refuse and say you want it sooner (this week) as most of the time it gets fixed and then you have to go through the hassle of being redirected from place to place to cancel the visit.

My parents asked me to send an email to them first. I've given them all the details (such as my address and number) so they can instantly trace the problem (or unless they will just say ring up).

Its the NTL proxy servers that are screwed again. If you connect through the manchester proxy at

inktomi1-man.server.ntl.com using port 8080 then messenger etc will all work again.

BTW im also connected to the lichfield UBR, so i know its a NTL problem, especially as all my friends are offline at the moment (at least the ones in the lichfield/rugeley area)

That proxy worked, but it's very slow. Will try another one from my area soon.

Yeah its not as fast, but i have messenger set up just to use that proxy and firefox runs through the normal methods.

You could also try another NTL proxy which may give you better performance

In Lichfield, can surf web,

but...

2 13 ms 7 ms 8 ms brhm-t2cam1-a-v109.inet.ntl.com [213.106.228.41

3 9 ms 9 ms 8 ms brhm-t2core-a-ge-wan63.inet.ntl.com [213.106.23

4 9 ms 11 ms 8 ms bir-bb-a-so-200-0.inet.ntl.com [62.253.185.145]

7 16 ms 16 ms 17 ms pop-bb-b-ae0-0.inet.ntl.com [213.105.172.77]

after this it times out, I cannot ping my work server either, which I know will accept icmp responses.

Web ok, but everything else is borked......

Top work NTL...

No point in ringing CS, as I just hate having to explain things to someone who insists on me rebooting the modem (done it already), after working on Cisco kit all day I don't want a CS telling me to do this.

Shame there isn't a different way to report a fault....

:erm:

always try this...

http://webmessenger.msn.com/

<grin>

:Yikes: Nope that dont work either....Someone kick NTL for me...

One thing i noticed was that up to 9am this morning all my traffic would go through my UBR (10.129.7.254) and then the b-cam at (213.106.228.173) since 9am this has changed and after the UBR my traffic is now routed through the a-cam at (213.106.228.45). Since the change messenger has stopped working. So my guess is its due to some change they made or b-cam going offline.

Hmm not convinced, I am going through 213.106.228.41 so I feel it could be something at their core.

Thing that gets me there is nothing on their service status to say 'hey we've screwed up again'

yup I was planning to do work on our servers but because the systems on NTL are borked I can't VPN in to the systems.

Ah I love it, well I'm moving into the Birmingham area and hopefully I will be a different network....as yet to be decided.

NTL are really sucking now, this is affecting ALL of Lichfield users from what I can tell...

Stinks!

Peeps,
just to add my 2pth worth... Am in Tamworth (not too far from Lichfield!) and cant get a VPN connection back into the office. If I use my internal DNS server, they cant resolve requests properly at the mo either... although if I set it to 'forward' to an NTL dns server it seems ok.

I also cant get to my own web server from the outside world either...
Somthing strange is afoot me thinks.

BizBo
22-02-2005, 21:12
The problem as I see it, and I'm no NTL expert....

The only thing that is seeing the outside world is the ntl proxies, we as customers are just bouncing around the NTL inside infrastructure, when we try to route of the network it just dies nothing more nothing less, the only thing keeping us from feeling we are totally devoid of internet access is the proxies on port80.

So for once, hooray for ntl-proxies, although if they go down, we will really be offline, even though we really are now....

Don't count on it, Tamworth is linked to the Birmingham servers, so your service will be exactly the same as mine.

planetWayne
22-02-2005, 22:02
As an update... cant get to a HTTPS site either - so - would seem that I you can get out through the proxies direct - but dont do anything 'normal' :/
----
another update... I've got a VoIP phone system - which still allows me to connect VoIP (SIP) to the states - possibly cause it uses UDP packets instead of TCP?

my only conclusion...

Yep same here,

VPN (nortel)
some FTP connections,
Ext. News Servers
Online Game Servers (BF1942, EQ2 etc)
Messenger

All inaccessible, however HTTP is working perfectly due to the proxies

Connection seems to have improved, still get a ping of about 2500MS and 2 *'s on one server while doing a tracert to www.google.co.uk (http://www.google.co.uk). Messenger still won't sign in and TeamSpeak refuses to connect. The eOn project seems to have no problems connecting now, hopefully they fix everything by morning.

anyone correct me if i am wrong here but i believe the issue was this:

there were problems with the winnersh datacentre yesterday as you have seen in other posts

this was affecting
- Email
- Homepages
- ntlworld.com
- newsgroups...
- DNS

on an intermittent basis

the DNS servers being intermittent were causing problems connecting to anything not going through ntl web proxies as it may not have been resolving your request however the proxies have cached DNS resolution so did not need to rely on the dns servers

but anything not connecting via proxies would have caused intermittent problems with dns resolution

there is also a problem with routing on a certain ip range but i do not believe that this affects you guys

hope this clarifies a little

anyone correct me if i am wrong here but i believe the issue was this:

I dont think this was all the issues, for instance my VPN would not connect at all, even when i forced it to use the IP address of the VPN server in the states.

Also connecting to the 2 different news servers (1 in the uk, 1 in the states) i appeared to get an initial burst of speed (approx 400k) then the transfer would be cut, attempting to reconnect would usually fail, if it connected then i would get the same small download again before being cut off. I tried this with both DNS name and IP addresses, same results both times.

Also the FTP sessions i connect to are mostly IP address's and these werent working correctly (very frequent time outs)

The change happened around 9:00am yesterday and when i got up this morning everything was working perfectly again :)

Well, I have binned NTL's DNS's as they seem to be one of the major problems, without DNS the core of the internet falls flat on its face.

And if this is happening all over the place then I'm afraid the th'internet will crumble.

Since swapping out the DNS's I seem to have a stable system. However friends who are on the NTL stream (which was once a flowing river) are suffering much like you, I will keep monitoring things this end.
