View Full Version : Windows XP - can't renew IP address

For the past couple of months I've been using an ethernet connection via a router to connect to NTL broadband. Last night, for no apparant reason, however, it stopped connecting claiming that the IP address couldn't be retrieved / renewed. I know there to be nothing wrong with the physical connection since I can access the same connection using Linux. It may have something to do with the fact that I contracted some kind of worm/trojan yesterday, although I think AVG got rid of that for me. I checked with IPConfig and my IP address began with something like 169....

This one's stumped me, some advice would be much appreciated.

Cheers,
Mike

If your connection is working using Linux then you know the Modem is working ok so it is either a faulty Network Card,Drivers or TCP/IP Stack corruption.

As you contracted a worm yesterday I would hazard a guess that it is the TCP/IP Stack, go into the Properties for the Connection and delete all of the options in there and then install them again.

See how that goes.

Ok

Download this to a floopy then run it on your windows pc.:) That should fix it.

Removing a virus/worm/trojan can have the same effect as spyware

you can't uninstall internet protocol on windows xp ;)

try ipconfig /renew from a dos prompt, and if it gives you the error

"an operation was attempted on something that is not a socket" have a look at this:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;817571

NB- if you have Service Pack 2 installed you can using the following from a command prompt to do the same as the article states for you:

netsh winsock reset catalog

Might be worth double-checking that none of the IP settings have been altered, or the hosts file fiddled with. Also check if the DHCP server can be pinged.

Bit daft that you can't delete TCP/IP in XP :erm: I recall hearing something at work about a problem with a hotfix and an "unsupported operation on interface" error.

i had this problem too and i fixed it by doing a system restore to when it last worked

i was told this can also fix the problem (http://http://homepage.ntlworld.com/johnhughes30/WinsockFix.zip)

169 IP range is used by windows as the APIPA when the host cannot recieve ip config info from the DHCP. may be worth checking your tcp/ip settings and clear references to any dhcp servers if you have any there. alternatively, you could uninstall the tcp/ip client and reinstall it. this should give a blank canvas for you. if you still get problems, check the cabling/network interfaces to the router. it is very possible that the physical layer is the issue.

EDIT - just read the bit about linux being ok on that hardware!!

I also have this problem, having recently (yesterday) recieved a new CM, I cannot connect through this. THe IP address is 169 and what ever I try doesn't seem to work. I have been in touch with MicroSoft who have talked me through everything now and still no luck. NTL seem to think that this is an XP issue, but still no joy. The weird thing is that my STB is still active and I can connect to the Internet via the STB.

I have tried 3 different computers, running XP Pro, Media Edition and also Win98 (yes, I still have one of those!). No luck on any of these.

Any one help?

Turn everything off (including th CM), leave a while.

Turn the CM on, leave a while.

Now turn the PC on.

Try that.

first things first.... are the "sync" and "rdy" lights solid on the modem? If they are not, the modem is not making a connection, so no point bothering with the rest of this post.

Lets stick with the 1pc that you want to connect to the modem just to avoid confusion. First of all reboot both modem and pc

winXP? if you go into a dos window (start-> run-> cmd) then type:
ipconfig /renew
Does it fail immediately or take >1minute or so? What error message do you get?
If it is "unable to contact dhcp" then try rebooting into safe mode with networking and doing the same again.

If you still get the same error, unscrew the coaxial cable from the modem, reboot modem and pc, then check the ip address- is it still starting with 169 or is it now 192?

:tu: Solved it!!!

Switched off the STB at the mains. Switched on the CM and then rebooted the PC. THis got me an IP address. Then I ran the CD that I got given and got connected to start the registration process. Completed the registration process and am now connected at a full 2Mb connection. The down side being that I have now got a new user name and email address. How do I ensure that I don't lose the old one as I have had it for a few years now and am very fond of it?

Many thanks to all who gave me suggestions. Better than the NTL CS ones!

contact technical support (0845 650 0925) and advise them that you have swapped from a STB to cable modem, and want to keep your old email address. They will then be able to migrate them so they will be active for as long as your SACM account is :)

I've just had the same problem as luminosity, with my daughters PC, AVG disposed of a trojan horse, and then the pc lost the connection, saying it could not renew the IP.
The suggestion to try WinsockFix by Bill C, was spot on.
The only drawback is that you NEED an internet connection to download it, a bit of a catch 22 situation if you only have 1 PCI. Lucky i have 2 PC's, so I could down load on 1 and tranfer to the other.

But Many thanks for the answer Bill, the problem had me banging my head for a while.:banghead:
