:welcome: to CF.

If you have a Lan card in your PC then DEFINITELY use it in preference to USB. USB BBand is a CPU intensive solution, unlike a proper Lan card.

If you don't have a Lan card but are comfortable adding PCI cards, I would still spend £10 on a card rather than use USB.

:welcome: to CableForum.

Ethernet is by far the most preferred connection. You do not need to use the installation CD at all if you use ethernet. Robin Walkers site can be very helpful if you are new to cable internet.http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/index.html

Your firewall will protect all 'network' connections on your computer, whether its Modem, USB or Ethernet. Should be no probs there.

Your firewall will protect you just the same whatever methos you use to connect. Read Robin Walkers guide that I linked to in my previous post for help in configuring.

I thought that you didn't need the CD at all on USB?

I thought that you didn't need the CD at all on USB?You don't if you get the USB drivers from elsewhere but do if it's your only available source of the USB driver.

depends if the device is reconised by windows. However it is still better that the proper drivers are used rather than the windows generic drivers

Thanks for your replies.

I connected via ethernet, and i thought it was running slower, so i done a speed check and it was running at 680kb, compared to over 750kb when i was using usb.

Strange i know, might be my ethernet card is rubbish, but ive gone back to usb again and my usb connection is definetley faster

i would have expected it to be the other way around if anything
