I'm in the market for a new TV. Anyone any advice?

I want widescreen and surround sound.

I use NTL for my TV so are there any issues with 100hz?

No there aren't issues with 100Hz.

Recently got a Toshiba 32ZP18Q Framescan TV 32" with Dolby 5.1 and full surround.

vvvvvv Good

Slightly OT

How much TV output ( if any) is broadcast in 5.1 or whatever it it that DVD/home theatre systems can ouput - I think I've been mislead to think that you only got that 5.1 sound off of DVDs ?

Plasma is out of the question, i want it to last more than a few years

A CRT should last 10 years plus. A plasma will last about 3 yrs

I believe plasmas have to be "recharged" every so often. This shouldn't limit their overall life though. (And if you can afford to spend five grand upwards on a TV, you can afford to have it recharged...)

I have a Sony widescreen TV and the picture quality is lovely, especially when compared to my parents' JVC widescreen set

sorry should have started a new thread I suppose.

It was a straight question, not trying to make any points

currently I can buy a dvd player with 5.1 decoder, and add a 5.1. speaker system and get 5.1 surround sound when playing a dvd.

My question is can I get such sound from TV broadcasts - thought they were Nicam.

do i need a TV with 51. decoder built in ?,
are (can) the broadcasters transmit 5.1 sound ?

The 5.1 is not supplied via the TV broadcasts. I use it for the DVD playbacks.

The only TV broadcasts with DD 5.1 are the movie channels on Sky if you have a Sky+ box.
You will get Dolby ProLogic Surround from any other TV broadcasts which is 4 channels of sound decoded from the normal stereo (Front left & right, center, and a rear channel)

Quite agree - we bought a Sony as it was much better than any other on display at the time.

Get the TV and a seperate surround sound amp - it will be better in the long run (trust me, ex-toshiba owner!)
BTW - Panasonic 32" WS and Yamaha 630 Amp

Does the NTL box not provide this sound from movie channels?

No. The NTL box cannot provide DD5.1. It does not have the required digital outputs.

It can provide Dolby Prologic though, as this requires analogue stereo outputs.

Yeah, if you can afford it get a Sony flatscreen 32" because they rock, period.

I used to have one of those 32" Panasonic "Tau" TVs which was very nice also.

Make sure you buy a 100mhz set.

Much better picture.

or

Go the whole hog and buy widescreen LCD( not from Samsung)and you will be able to plug your new mini P.c directly into it.

P.s
do not tell the wife about your other proposed purchase.
