View Full Version : Extremely slow web browsing

Hi, I have the 1.5mb service and have had problems with web browsing being extremely slow since sevice migrated to 1.5meg several months ago. Occationally downloads are slow as well, but this is only about 20% of the time (although downloads go down to almost zero and make it unusable).
Engineer has been out several times and agrees it is terrible and has tried many things, but I think he's running out of ideas now!! I have STB but engineer has also lent me cable modem to check for improvements, unfortunately it is exactly the same. Web browsing is terrible about 85% of the time, with simple pages like Google taking up to a minute to load. Sometimes you can get a page to load faster by hitting the refresh button several times. Last week just to check, I took cable modem and computer to two friends houses to try out. Both worked superb, just as they should do.

The engineer has been excellent and regularly contacts me to see if there are any improvements.... but there never are.
I do have wireless router, but have also disconected this and tried for several days with direct connection, have also tried swapping cables (used same cables at friends house) but nothing gives improvement.
I am getting to stage now where, although I don't want to, I am going to have to look for new broadband provider as I am paying nearly £40 a month for something that is slower than dial up using my mobile phone the majority of the time. I am making one last attempt to see if any of you experts out there can think of anything else.

Many thanks

Dave

i assume you have checked here (http://www.ntl-isp.ntl.com/ServiceStatus/) to make sure you are not in a crippled area :erm: , could you provide some tracerts as well :)

I am in one of the crippled areas (Brighton) but I have had exactly same problem since spring / summer of last year. Also it works fine at two friends that are very close.

Here are a few tracerts;

All I can say at the moment are those tracerts are perfectly fine.

When you say you tried the connection at a friends house, are they on ntl broadband as well?

Yep, both on NTL broadband with cable modems. I just swapped their cable modem and computer for mine and everything worked fine. As soon as I plug back into my house, it takes minutes to open up a page. If I hit refresh several times the page will load most of the time.

Ok best advice I can give you is to contact tech support for stand alone cable modem on 0845 650 0925 for the modem to be checked for signal loss.

Thanks, I'll give it another try. I was just not sure whether they are still doing things!! They tried many things over about four months, then said they was off to try something else and have not heard from them since. That was at beginning of Novemeber.

When the tech guys come out they are amazed how slow it is, slower than a mobile phone on internet. They have tried their own laptops on the line and it does the same. They also tried their laptops in several places including headend (whatever that is!!) and it was the same, they could not figure out why though.
I think they may have run out of ideas, but each time I get them out it costs me a day off work - I wouldn't mind if I thought it would be fixed, but so far it has cost me 10 work days (a few thousand pounds) and it's just as bad as it was in summer.

I'll give them one more ring tomorrow, then unfortunately I think it will have to be search for a new broadband provider. I suppose it's a good chance to move to Sky+ and BT at the same time, then I can have caller display and a TV that doesn't freeze several timees a night. :)

I doubt it would be a head end problem if your friends connection is fine, assuming they are in the same area as yourself.

Are your friends in the same post code area?

Are there any neighbours the closer the better with ntl broadband to see how their coneenction is.
It could be a cabling problem from the node in the street to your property,if it is then a cable repull is needed.

Let us know how you get on.

Next door neighbours works fine, they have slower connection, 700k, but tried my computer on there and it was good. I have already had new cable pulled through, they have also changed bits in the box and also bits in other places (sorry bits is as technical as I can get!!)

The engineers did keep coming back and tried many things (technical again) and also phoned me regularly to see if what they had done had made a difference. Then all contact stopped in November (they did say they had run out of ideas), they also said that something was being changed or added in my area in January, and they would make sure mine was changed first!??!!!

I'm sitting and hoping for an improvement - but feel I may have been forgotten:confused:
