View Full Version : Slow/No service in OXFORD area?
Hi All.
I have NTL broadband using cable modem/USB and up to 8th Jan the connection has been fine. Ever since the connection has just gone to snail like speed and eventually gets timed out. However, the home page always loads as normal but cannot connect to other pages without it being timed out. I am wondering if this problem is affecting anyone else. the service status page refers to a problem in the Cambridge region, but surely this is too far away? Any help is greatly recieved.
:welcome:
have you spoken to technical support regarding the problem? and if so, what did they say?
Been tyring to get through all morning, but get the line "due to high caller volume, please call back later". I dont think its anything wrong my end because nothing has been altered between the internet working as normal and when it has completly died in speed terms

Robert, iDon't think you're alone. If you look at this thread (http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?p=382179#post382179 you'll see other people are suffering v similar issues. Looks like there are some nationwide tech issues.
Cheers,
Andy
hi guys
i rang NTL tech. support twice and they said there is nothing wrong with the connection and the slow browsing is caused by some spyware. however, on my computer i have spybot S&D, spyware doctor, adware and Zone alarm firewall. could i therefore be at risk from spyware still? the tech. support guy said that i should wipe internet explorer. had slow (very slow till eventually timed out) browsing for 2 weeks and the connection still doesnt work even when i try to browse using firefox. any suggestions guys?
thanks

Guys please, this thread is about an issue in Oxford, Nottingham = completely different network and not related. If no synch best thing to do is contact CS + try and get and engineer.
robert - if you have a slow/intermitting service I may be able to assist, send me your IP address when you are on the cable modem.
Did you find out any info on this?
I am in headington just North of Oxford and am getting random disconnect problems and occasionally the connection slows down to a snails pace, giving pings well over 1000 in games.
I am in Oxford, in Cowley, I have 750k. The internet is so slow. Its so annoying. I did a speed test, (I was using bit-torrent, I closed it when I did the test, no p2p softwares were running, its still slow without any P2P)results:

I'm in Greater Leys and it's picked up considerably in the last couple of days, almost back to full speed.
Phoned Ntl on Saturday, they did a test and said the signal was low power or something. Anyway an engineer came round today and sorted it, finding out that one of the connections entering the house was dodgy and everythings seems fine now. I didnt realise but apparently we are about 50meters away from the main Oxford hub and thus our connection should be good. :D
Anyway i have to say ntl's customer service in this case has been excellent, reporting the problem on saturday afternoon and its fixed by monday afternoon. Just wish i reported the problem sooner.
I do check what Broadband Cable I have? Whether its 600k or 750k or 250k.
My internet was back on Friday 4 th of February, after 2 months without it(since 9 december), because NTL closed it down, they messed up. I just want to know how do I check if they gave me the right Broadband cable internet, speed.
Give this a try: http://www.adslguide.org.uk/tools/speedtest.asp
The only accurate test i have found is robin walker's speed test, its either accurate or just gives me results i want to hear ;)
But honestly, give it a try - http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/speedtest.html

The best way to check is (if you have an ambit/ ntl home modem) got to:
http://192.168.1.1/ and login with username and password or "root" (no quotes)

1st 128K took 7130 ms = 18383 Bytes/sec = approx 153 kbits/sec
2nd 128K took 6119 ms = 21420 Bytes/sec = approx 178 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 5137 ms = 25515 Bytes/sec = approx 212 kbits/sec
4th 128K took 4998 ms = 26225 Bytes/sec = approx 218 kbits/sec

Is that the address of the modem? As i have a linksys router with that ip address and surely 2 devices with the same ip's are going to cause problems?
We have the ntl home 200 modem.
Think he made a mistake, its 192.168.100.1 :)
