Hello! I have a motorola surfboard SB401 cable modem connected to the computer through the ethernet card. Everything is OK but, after downloading any file from a p2p net, my computer always reboots when i try to switch it off. The OS is windows XP. Have anybody any idea about what the problem could be? Thanks a lot!

May be you have 'wake on LAN' enabled in the BIOS? Not sure how this is connected with P2P though.

Hi! i'm here once again. i dunno what exactly a wake of LAN is, but ihave the flash protection enabled in the BIOS. Could be this?

Don't think so. 'Wakeup on LAN', if enabled, means that the system, even if 'switched off', will reboot if it receives data on the Ethernet connection (not sure if ANY data, or a particular type). I had what I thought was a strange problem with a PC which insisted on rebooting after I'd 'switched it off', and it was because 'Wake-up on LAN' was enabled. It's usually a setting in the BIOS.

ok! I've found this option in the energy options of the ethernet card, but it's disabled. the option, opposed to this one, that let's the computer to switch the ethernet card off is enabled, but this is only a energy saver. do you think this could be connected with the problem?

I found a couple of documents that may help on the Microsoft website. Have a look at http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;308029 and http://support.microsoft.com/kb/320299

If those links don't work, go to http://support.microsoft.com/ and search for 308029 and 320299..

Now i have to read the articles. I suppose it will take me a while. I'll do my best and i'll tell you the results. it's been very helpful to keep contact with you. Thanks a lot to all of you!

Does the reboot problem only occur when you have used P2P? If it shuts down normally at other times then it would help to narrow the search down if we knew what P2P software you use.
Does the PC go through the shutdown but fail to power down at the end of does it just hang and then reboot automatically?
If it reboots automatically you may be having a bluescreen problem and going into
Start menu,
control panel,
system,
advanced tab,
startup and recovery
and then taking the tick out of the box next to restart automatically will help as it will allow you to see if there is a bluescreen error prior to the reboot.
