The modem is OK (sort of) but i cannot get an IP address. The techs say it's Farnborough-local problem, but I can see several people here, who share the same UBR with me. Are you guys on dial-up too? or having trouble too?

Have you tried the usual reboot ?

I reboot every 30 minutes, since 8am,

I reboot, I type in 192.168.100.1, I login, I then get modem config screen, everything is ok, I refresh and then it dies. It sounds like a modem problem to be. They claim that the local dchp server has run out of ip addresses!!!

Thanks. I am back on just now, my modem is working fine. We are both on the same UBR (you used to have tthe ubr ip address above your avatar). Our UBR is nicely balanced now!

There was a problem in Guildford which might have affected you Miss NTL.

NTL say that problem is resolved but they may be telling porkies ;)
