I was browsing eBay and came accross this....

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=3716&item=6718586598&rd=1

Is that fake or real? If its real, how does it work? NTL control the MAC addreses dont they?

If it is real, how it works is something that will not be discussed here.

Whoever is selling it is surely breaking the law, and is definitely encouraging those who buy it to violate their ntl contract & steal services. Anyone who uses it will be obtaining services they are not paying for, & so is a thief. Also, if someone were to use an uncapped modem, or chipped modem, etc., I'd hope that ntl would not be unaware of it for very long.

That link should be reported to ebay. I think ntl also have a contact for things like this? (I'm sure they do for reporting chipped STBs, anyway).

Reckon he is just trying to make a quick quid before crimbo.
Cant see how it can work due to the mac addy.

*sigh* chipped, ya right, could have at least made the scam convincing.

I know *exactly* what this scrote means by that and it's really a bad idea as it's both eminently detectable and pleasantly illegal.

Yes it means that the only way its chipped is my sticking a Macdonalds Potato Chip to the modem.;)

I can understand the idea of hacking a digital STB, so that (until they change something) it receives everything available.

But to initiate a broadband connection, the modem MUST communicate with NTL - who surely have some means of banning lost/stolen modems?

well, the auction's gone, but has the user's account been removed too? I didn't get to see the auction (although I understand what was on offer) so didn't see the user's name to be able to verify. Hopefully they've been terminated (in the Schwarzenegger style) :D

I was told yesterday that a service tech ( former seinor ) from Belfast has resigned over alleged fraud, and a manager has been suspended , pending further investigation. Wonder how they will get round to blaming the contractors on this one ?

They removed the item yesterday. Even emailed me to tell me that they had done so (rather than the usual "thanks but we can't comment on what we have done...").

I have found a way to fool the cable modem system, and possibly get the wrong tier (havent tried going this far) I am planning on ringing ntl tommorow and reporting what I found, will tell monkeybreath or some other ntl staff in pm what I did if they wish to know.

its illegal mate their known as clones & if you use one your breaking the law. i was gonna say report em to eBay but it looks like someone already has, i recently reported someone for selling a Sony VTX-S760U (i have one) as they'd brought a Sky + remote & were claiming that its a Sky + receiver, Sony never made Sky + receivers, so its very misleading.

if by standard you mean one bought direct from a supplier then no, but if you're in the uk its as good as a door stop as you can't connect it legally to any cable network in the uk

i mean NTL/Telewest/VM modems that they have failed to collect from their ex customers & are not modified/hacked in anyway.

i'd say no as they are rented off VM and not yours to sell, there may be some form of possession law that allows you to claim it as yours

No matter where a modem comes from, even if you could sell it, it is a plastic paperweight until Virgin activate it.

Which they won't do unless they have issued it to you
