Following on from the thread "Virus Message"
http://www.cableforum.co.uk/board/showthread.php?t=16234&page=3&pp=15
I have been able to access my e-mails ok but at various times while surfing using either Internet Explorer or Netscape I type in a url or I select a favourite site and instead of getting the site I end up with the site showing this page http://outbreak.ntli.net/ I usually have to close the browser then reopen and try again. Sometimes all is ok but other times it goes back to the above site. Some of my favourite sites are more prone than others.
Does anyone have any ideas why this is occurring? :)

Download this program (Hijack this) from http://www.zerosrealm.com/downloads/hjt.zip.

Run it and post the output here so that we can see whats running on your system.

Sounds like some sort of weird DNS problem. On XP I would suggest flushing the DNS cache, but you can't do that in 98. Strange. Try booting the PC with the modem unplugged, then reboot with the modem plugged in. Might help

This may be of no use whatsoever, but this little utility is very good at digging out and removing things that the basic Windows clean up tasks do not reach., including index.dat files.

Okay,
Did some more digging here tou do have a homepage and searchpage hijacker there (O8 - Extra context menu item: &Search - http://bar.mywebsearch.com/menusearch.html?p=ZRxdm075_ and O2 - BHO: (no name) - {00A6FAF1-072E-44cf-8957-5838F569A31D} - C:\PROGRAM FILES\MYWEBSEARCH\SRCHASTT\1.BIN\MWSSRCAS.DLL)

It can be uninstalled via Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs. It will show up as "My Search Bar" or "My Web Search".

Please also run the following program from here...

http://www.webroot.com/services/spyaudit_03.htm

The thing about this as you already know - is that this is a page which NTL decides to show when it detects something wrong. It could be that you have a faulty modem, it could be that your AVG isnt picking up a virus too, the trouble is - that it could also be there is nothing wrong and you get this for no reason.

I would still suggest that you try a different virus checker - also in your firewall, look at the logs and see if you can see anything strange that might be generating traffic either constantly or in bursts.

Sorry i cant really help more than this though.

I've tried your suggestions but it still inststs on jumping to the ntl virus page at random times but especially when doing a search and clicking on a link.
It is getting frustrating as I have to copy and paste any site addresses and even then it sometimes ends up at the ntl virus page :(

I installed AVG 7 Free three days ago did a search found nothing but I haven't had the ntl outbreak page since so I'm very pleased but mystified as to why it's all ok now.

Thanks everyone for all your help in sorting this out. :) :D
