My computer still hasn't sold so I'm putting it on eBay now.
I've been looking at the royal mail site trying to find out prices for delivery but not having much luck.

Does anyone know of a service that will ship a heavy and valuable item like a computer for a person? A lot of them only do companies.

Parcelforce will ship up to 30KG, they'll also pick it up and you can specify extra insurance. I've used the several times to ship/receive DJ decks etc, very heavy stuff, never had a single problem.

Cheers Bifta.
How much would a computer base unit weigh do you think?

Depends on whats in it of course :D Might be more than 30kg or less than, it's hard to tell, do you have a set of bathroom scales?

You can price up a delivery on parcelforces site when you know the total weight

It would have to be a bloody heavy pc to exceed 30kg (imagine 15 bags of sugar ;))

If it is less than 20kg then you can send it as a Royal Mail standard parcel, which might be cheaper.

1kg is £3.45 and its 86p for every 250g or part 250g over that right up to 20kg making the maximum weight of 20kg cost £19.79

What it costs

Maximum weight First class cost 60g 28p 100g 42p 150g 60p 200g 75p 250g 88p 300g £1.01 350g £1.15 400g £1.3345 0g £1.50 500g £1.68 600g £2.03 700g £2.38 750g £2.55 800g £2.7390 0g £3.10 1kg £3.45

For First Class items over 1kg, it's 86p for every extra 250g.

It's a computer base unit, you'll be looking at at least 15kg, 1st you have to lump it to the post office, based on 15kg, it'll cost you over 50 quid to send it, with NO insurance! Far cheaper to get Parcelforce out to collect it, they even print the label for you so all you have to do is slap it in a box.

I'd recommend http://www.parcel2go.com/ I've used them to send stuff abroad (the Netherlands and the USA) and they are great, they send Securicor both times and they turned up first thing. The parcels both got to where thy were going before I imagined they'd get there and they were very good value for money.

I've gone with Parcelforce 48.
If any of you were interested in buying it but couldn't collect you can now bid on eBay starting from £250. :)

Try UPS or business post, they both have a INTERNET tracking system so you can see when you parcel was delivered.

For anything over 2kg I use Supamail pre-paid notes from TNT. For up to 30kg with £5000 full transit liability they charge me £18 + VAT. For up to 10kg it's £13. This is guaranteed next day before noon. You can pay more for before 9:00 or before 10:30 services.

I usually order at least 10 notes at a time so you'ld have to check with them about a one-off. They seem pretty good so I'm sure they'd do it.

Perhaps they have different contracts for different destinations or collection addresses?

Edit - Looking at their site they do seem to have DHL plastered all over it now! Maybe they have changed companies since I last used them (4 months ago) :erm:

:notopic: I know but :bigcry: as I was hoping to scramble the cash together to buy this but not in the next 7 days.

Well you could bid and then pay me in 2 weeks or something.
One other forum member can't pay me until the 24th if he wins. :)

This is a bit of an old one but today I found some useful information. I've just returned an unwanted cycle trailer weighing 20kg.

Staples is an agent for Securicor Omega. Take your heavy parcel to them and get it shipped for delivery next day anywhere within mainland UK for £8 (inc VAT) - a bargain. They'll also do timed deliveries too.
