Hello, I have just had a NTL chap round to install BB for me.

I got a 200 modem (on 3 times too much coax!) and a little pack with short ethernet & USB cables in.

However the PC is in the back room & he did not give me a cable to connect to it.

Are'nt they supposed to leave enough cable to do the job?
I need approx 15m.

I suppose I have to ring CS up now & complain that I cannot connect the PC up.

For the 3 mins he stopped here the install was OK but a bit short of cable?

By the way, it is a straight cable from the CM200 to the PC isn't it?

Generally, the SACM (modem) should be installed next to your PC.

The cable from the modem itself will be a "crossover" this isn't actually a straight reversal of the connections, (as I found out way back when I started making up my own cables).

This one should do the job:

*edit Looking at Monkeybreath's comment below, I have the Terajet CM myself so the CM200 may have a standard patch cable.. can you confirm MB?

It should have been installed next to your pc. Contact c/s (preferably today) and they can arrange for the engineer to come back and do the job properly.

And yes, it is a straight cable from the modem.

Though the CM can detect which cable is plugged in and automatcally uncross or cross it or whatever it needs to do.

Really?

I didnt think the modems (the ambit 100/120/200 series) could use xover cables.

Infact, im pretty sure they cant. Anyone else like to clarify?

Ok, so its a straight through cable & it should be next to the PC.

However, I asked for it to be in the front room near the TV and for him to just leave me the cable as I did not want the eng to do any drilling etc.
I just want to be able to run the ethernet cable myself.

Question is should NTL provide this or do I have to buy one myself?

NTL normally only use the long ethernet cables for installing a STB > PC connection.

I dont think there is a set yes or no as to wether they should leave an ethernet cable. You will proberbly have to get one yourself :-(

You can try calling NTL, im not sure what the outcome would be. Id say no.

Is there any chance that the coax is long enough to reach the back room?

Robin can...

Auto-MDIX
An Auto-MDIX ethernet socket automatically senses what sort of cable it has connected to it, and switches into the correct mode to work with the other end of the link. Some modern PC ethernet cards are Auto-MDIX. Some modern cable modems have Auto-MDIX ethernet sockets. If either end of a link is Auto-MDIX, then the link will work with either a straight-through or a cross-over cable. The following cable modems are known to have Auto-MDIX ethernet sockets:

ntl:home 100/120 (Ambit).
Note that Auto-MDIX sensing is different from speed and duplex settings: Auto-MDIX is just about the wiring configuration, speed auto-sensing and duplex auto-negotiation is about the signal on the wires.

Cool! I never knew that.

Ill 100% clarify it when i get home and post it here.

I tried both crossover & std & the ethernet light worked OK.

I'll ring NTL up later for more cable & see what they say.

Anyone care to point me towards a CM200 info page? diag screen access etc?

192.168.100.1 is the internal diags page of the modem.

User : root
Pass : root

I wouldnt fiddle in there tho :-)

Ta, it would help me to at least know that I am talking to the modem.

The rest is just a matter of waiting for NTL to fix thier registration system.

It can? We have a 15m crossover but the longest straight cable is 4m iirc, with a belkin router and an ntl modem (think it's a 100, im at uni so can't check!) would the crossover work?

Yes. The NTL modem will sort it out.

Oh, didn't realise that... cool

This 200 has worked with both crossover or straight cables, even when swapping them while system is working/being used.

Now I have a crossover adapter for spares :D
