I have been having problems with my connection with my cable modem.

Periodically I cannot send mails or get on the web, but if I leave it, service will return at some point. Maybe a few minutes; maybe an hour. The lights on my modem do not go off - they stay as normal.

I've been in contact with TS and they seem to think my router is the problem, but, I've had it for about a year and cannot understand why it should start to cause this.

The thing is, the TS guy asked me to try things and one of them was a reboot and power down. Today I lost my connection and I waited and waited and then turned everything off, rebooted and both time I was back online.

I'm not a novice, but I'm not an expert either and I just don't know which way to go next. Is my router at fault; it is just a coincidence when I reboot; is there a problem with the modem.......

Please could someone point me in a direction :D

If they think it's your router they should have asked you to take this out of the equation. Disconnect it and plug the modem into the PC direct (not very good if you've got multiple clients I know) but at least if it goes pete tong again you'll know it's not the router.

Might have been a quick deal person on the phone trying to get their stats up for the day (or a mirror investigation), so they fobbed you off.

Try turning all kit off, and back on again starting with the modem, then router, then the PCs when everything else is working.

If it's still going belly up again turn it off, and connect one PC to the modem forgetting the router for a bit, if the problem doesn't go away it's the modem, and if it does it's the router.

Post back either way.

Yep - currenlty have modem plugged straight into PC. If it's going to go it will do so within 24 hours as it seems to occur everyday at some point.

Will be back later either way..... and thanks :tu:

I'm back so soon! Just had a half hour period of no connection with the router out of the equation. Didn't have time to re-boot etc BEFORE I was back on line.

Now what?

OK, then either the modem or the connection itself is fcuked.

Whoops - sorry!

I have an NTL 100

And I get this:

Type : Ambit ETH/USB Combo Cable ModemCable modem : Ambit Cable ModemMAC address : IP address : Downstream Receive Power Level : 6.19 dBmvDownstream SNR : 34.26 dBUpstream Transmit Power Level : 45.50 dBmv

I take it I shouldn't give out addresses?

OK...my take (I'm not a cable modem techy, though...all based on rdhw's info)

Downstream Power: Probably OK.

Downstream SNR: It's meant to be higher than 30, so that's perfectly fine.

Upstream Power: Meant to be less than 58, preferably less than 55, so yours looks fine.

Nope, it's best not to post any kind of information such as IP address, MAC address, etc.
