I have noticed that when browsing the web, my IP is not my IP?

What I mean is my IP is 82.1.*****, my DHCP Server is 80.5.160.21

I've visited a couple of sites, www.symantec.com (security check), www.whatismyip.com, allnetworktools

They all showing my IP as 80.5.160.X (where X is a value that now appears to have changed)

Why is this happening, and is it something I should be concerned about. I'm using Zone Alarm Pro... but I just don't know where this "IP" address has come from although its something to do with ntl.

I've only just noticed the problem but who knows how long its been like that - probably some wonderful "security" feature of XP SP2 that disguises your real IP with that of your DHCP server???????!!

Help, I'm getting miffed.

That's one of the proxy caches serving your area - the online sites that try and guess your IP are being fooled by it. Your IP is whatever your computer thinks it is.

You can check your real IP by visiting http://www.showmyipeurope.com/

Thanks for that.

I'd presumed similar because mIRC was reporting my real IP. So.... on finding that out then, is there a way to get these sites to recognise my real IP, although I suppose its handy that they don't?

It's to do with the way those sites are programmed, so unfortunately not.
