indeedy - my experience of them is that they take your CV and extract information from it such as your employer's address and former employer's addresses and then mail shot them touting for business. never include address details for your employers and never include contact names.

e.g. if you're a visual basic programmer they will mail shot your current employer offering some visual basic programmers - and if you're unlucky they might even include your CV in the mail shot!

my other experience of recruitment companies is that they advertise jobs that dont exist - ie. they advertise for a VB programmer in say Manchester City centre but what they are really after is your CV so they can find companies that might be looking for VB programmers.

Hi everybody.

In my experience with advertising agencies in Nottingham, I have had the distinct impression that the staff will push any vacancy your way that they are desperate to fill or will make their targets more achievable.

The majority of jobs that I have been given info for suggests that they need filling quickly or have a target on. They seem to give little thought to matching skills and experience to potential roles.

To echo the previous post - all style no substance

There are good and bad agencies, unfortunately most are in the bad category. I only know about agencies dealing with the sort of work that I am involved with, some agencies specialise and others try to be a jack of all trades.

The company that my current employer has done an exclusive deal with is called "Computer Futures" I have without doubt found them to be the most useless agency of the lot. Over the past three years I have spoken with in excess of a hundred agencies (no BS) 90% of the time they have made contact and I recently had an experience where they were promising the earth about a job locally, I made my own enquieries and found the company didn't even have the jobs authorised to proceed. I understand that is still the same situation one month on, a manager happened to mention it to the agency and they advertised the jobs.

I have also found as others have mentioned here, agencies phone you up fishing. They act as though they are your long lost friends and have some great opportunities just around the corner, very often they turn the conversation around and asked who does the hiring in the company that you currently work for.

A good agency are worth their weight in gold, they will match your skills to vacant positions and sell your skills, they will do their best to get you an interview in a way that you could not do yourself.

I only know 2 or 3 agencies that I would say are good from past experience.

I think you may be referring to Brook Street.

I have had good experience with Employment Agencies, apart from one that refused to look at my CV again and carried on sending me to industrial assignments.

Yeah, they're pretty high up on my list of least favourite people. Along with estate agents, telesales people, double glazing reps, etc...

:D I had two calls from different agencies yesterday about the same job, neither agency would diclose who the company was!

It wasn't that difficult to work out though, first agency said the job was in Hampshire and the second said Reading. They were looking for HFC Architects, apparently they are having difficulty filling real jobs these days.
I phoned an old friend to ask if it was the company I thought and he confirmed, "yes ntl" He said they cannot find anyone with the skills who want to go and work for them. I told the agency I was not interested if it was ntl, but they would not disclose the employer and the second one asked if they could forward my CV for them to have a look.

Oh well, guess all the people with the relevant years experience have taken early retirement or moved onto other jobs, I guess it must be hard to find people with such specialised skills.

Perhaps they should of thought about that before making most redundant and pi**ing the rest off into leaving. :D The old mate did make me chuckle when he mentioned some of the people we know doing those sort of roles these days.

Hi guys, i have used this website and thought you might find it interesting http://www.postmyjob.co.uk they post your job across multiple job boards including Total Jobs, Reed, CV Library, Monster and 100's more for same cost as going to one directly. Its GUARANTEED to fill your vacancy and you dont pay any recruitment fees.

Heyyo, Take my advice stay well clear of them, no matter what you get told.

They will rip you off, and tell you a pack of lies just to get the commission for your hard work, l have had dealings with TWO in the past, and they were rubbish. I got more joy doing it my way, and that was by finding a company/ies in your area that do what you want to work in, send in a CV to the Managing Director or even fax it to them, so that they read it. I am certain you will get something from that.

All this crap about we have plenty on offer to suit you, and then you find out what they are charging that employer and you get peanuts.

Companies will think more of you doing that as you are showing initiative.

Stay well clear of them

depends what you are after really. I had a short flirtation with Randstaad who were ok for a while - till some 'boss' in a call centre pulled me up for not wearing appropriate trousers (I turned up in jeans one day) - we weren't customer facing and this guy doing the pulling up had those massive ear ring things you see (flesh tunnels?) and would have looked more appropriate on an African warrior on the serengheti rather than a jumped up jobsworth in a call centre.

They phoned up the Randstaad woman there and then and told me if I didn't go home and get changed on unpaid time I would never work for them again

I refused to - flounced out and never looked back - was best thing I ever did with regard to work.
