Been offline much since friday last week, have talked to TS/CS on many many occasions and it seems the engineers are looking into this and appear to have been since monday. In my experience going into my second week without internet access I will just outright cancel the service. But something does puzzle me about how this is working.

Phoned NTL to report fault ... get treated like a numpty. But do EVERYTHING they say. Still no go.. Phoned again later. Still nothing reported in the area (even though I am not the only one suffering FACT).

Finally get bothered around sunday phone again to be told .. Engineers do not work weekends.. (gee 999 .. sorry you can't call cos NTL dont work weekends) anyway i will move on .. I am told my fault request/report has been cancelled and NTL will be looking into the issue. Ok i think ... ill be sorted soonly..

Carry on until monday (thinking engineers will actually be at work),, still no reported issues until 4pm for my area. Ok, so now it will be fixed right. Wrong. OK maybe now it will get fixed.

Tuesday comes .. I phone up enquire as to if it will be fixed now knowing full well nothing appears to have worked so far. I am told there is no outstanding faults for my area. WTF. I make another polite enquiry and yes there is a fault in my area.. whooopeee. Engineers are looking to fix a resolution and should be ok for Wednesday.

Left NTL alone for all of wednesday. And phoned thursday. Get 1 persion to speak to and they tell me. They will raise a fault report but in his opinion it will only get deleted as there is still a reported fault in my area.

If anybody has any ideas how to terminate ntls contract and fast please let me know because for a cummunications company not to have faults fixed over a weekend is slightly offbase imho. Also why are faults deleted by engineers without actually attending the users or phoning to confirm they can be.

I have made 3 fault reports and 3 have been deleted. Its beyond a joke. I have had my fair share of issues but I used to support NTL in many things and even recommend them. This is no more.

I was offered by one poor lass in CS 1 month free but I declinded the offer until after this is fixed and based on subsequent chats I will be not taking there offer up.

I have tried to be calm to all people I have spoken to but this is a joke ... Why is faults being deleted even if they are not resolved.

Hi,

Try CS and TS again later today.
Have all the usual info to hand: times, dates, etc. Also the names of anyone you have spoken to already. Let the person on the other end absorb your problem before thay are pressed for an ansnwer. If they can't help you then politely ask them for a suggestion of who can.

It sounds as though you've already done all of that, but give it another try?

Be really calm and open to suggestions.

Sorry if I've just stated the bl***** obvious.

scuzz, thank you for responding.

However I have tried that and actually got 1 person that is helpful and about 4 people sympathetic to my problem. It still does not get me anywhere as they are "still looking into the problem"

As I said engineers do not work weekends so the time when I probably use the connection the most is again offline with no likelyhood of it being fixed. There people in my area that are connected quite happily and they do not have the issue.

The bit that annoys me the most is .. I phoned on friday and saturday to report my plight and I know others did also and reading the forum there are other people suffering from similar issues but seems to be isolated to a few individuals. Why oh why not try and fix them rather than a blanket "looking into the problem". surely its a matter for collating some information and saying ok. We can fix your problem but we think you are having similar problems as a few people in your area. What would you like us to do?.

I have had everything from engineers looking at your line to New cable modem. But as the calls keep getting cancelled and engineers not working weekends I am in a bind. It is more like NTL are self terminating the contract of supply by not resolving the issue.

How long is an acceptable period to go without a service you pay for and have not the ability to use because of a fault with the service equipment. One for the lawyers I guess.

Open to suggestions I have at last count based on TS/CS calls rebooted the modem 28 times in a 3 day period, this got beyond a joke but I did it anyway because the guy on the end of the phone has his job to do and at the end of the day if it actually work then great.

I am on the network but I can not do anything, look at webpages or download anything at greater than 1mb in size without the connection dying. Any call that results in a fault report being raised will not get actioned the TS guys told me this is the case. So I am lost as to where to go next.

NTL must really be working hard on this issue as it has taken 7 days to just get the cable let on, the internet is useless and given that dialup (not provided by ntl) is actually for me more stable right now. I think NTL have some work to do and it seems around the country lots of people are suffering similar issues. In my opinion NTL will lose at lot of customer base very very shortly if they keep deleting fault reports etc and hiding the problem. Management need to take the bull by the horns and DEAL with the issues and not let people hide them away from them.

On many occasions I have considered asking for a manager to speak to and the next call I make sometime after 3pm today I will be doing just that. In hindsight (always a wonderful tool), I think just calmly turning off the modem, switching off the PC and boxing the modem back up and send to NTL special delivery with a box of red roses or a horses head (cant decide which right now) will have made this whole issue gone away.

NTL is currently teasing me, I am on the network but can do nothing with the service.

NTL soon experience the wrath of the rights of the customer and the customer usually votes with there feet.

I would be keeping an eye on NTL's ACTIVE broadband user rate and will see how many people voted.

I was wondering if your connection was 1M, now 1.5M?
If so you may need a new modem, which ntl say they will be providing, according to their 'upgrade' email earlier this week.

stuG

Yes 1m now 1.5m.

Terrajet 210 modem

but problems started approx 2 weeks b4 upgrade actually happened

hope this helps

How's about ringing CS/TS to see if you're going to need a new modem?
I binned the ntl email - it didn't refer to me as I only have 750 (was 600) connection, but I remember that it specifically mentioned new modems being needed for the upgraded speed for 1/1.5.

I suspect that there's an underlying problem too, but I'm not nearly knowledgable enough to suggest anything. No one else seems to have exactly the same problem as you as far as I can see.

Good luck!

Im thinking that its the Pace STBs that cant handle the 1.5MBit thruput so they are being swapped for Samsung models, however the Modems are all fine afaik.

:) I think you're right, Zeph. I didn't read the email too carefully when it got to the 1/1.5Gb bit.

:welcome: to Cable Forum, stu. It's been a little quiet this afternoon but there are a number of NTL staffers who visit this forum, hopefully one of them might be along in a wee while with some suggestions for you.

I have been on the phone to several people in ntl since 3pm to 5:20pm and seems to be finally come to a agreement that my connection is fubar.

Spoke to some people today who may be able to push my problem higher onto the priority side. My main issue was Faults refusing to acknoledge there was actually a fault and just bounce this back.

Plus we apparently had been phoned but we do not accept anonymous phone calls and this is not the case, this issue is far from resolved but
looks like it is actually moving forward this time for real.

stuG

I have requested a replacement modem for my Terrajet 210 and we will see what happens. Geraint in TS said he would phone faults and push this through. All we can do is see when this happens. I do not doubt Geraint's intentions or abilities my concern is Faults still may just ignore like so many previous occasions.

logged 42 disconnections from irc and Counter-Strike in the last 24 hours.

If anyone knows of a fix or what the problem is please tell me as Cambridge Customer services say everything is ok

I dont know how you feel but i find this unacceptable. Was in a CSGN European Qualifier Tonight and got the Warning Connection Error for the 14th time today.

just got a message from my brother 1/2 a mile down the road, getting same errors. he phoned NTL and got response "As far as we can see there are no problems in the PE29 area"

Oh well that good then, as long as NTL cant see a problem i suppose it's alright? Well it's not alright, 20 or so disconnections from the net for both me and my Bro is NOT ALRIGHT. NTL are Quick enough to upgrade the pricing, yet seem to not be concerned with any problems paying customers have.

Hi, Im having a problem also. I have been offline pretty much for 8 days so far. All you can do is Report the fault to ntl and be polite and do not take TS as a final answer get CS involved too.

Finally got NTL faults ring me up, I have got an engineer booked for friday coming, this will mean i will be into my 3rd week of a unusable service.

I have made an agreement with NTL to get a credit for this lack of service plus more compensation in the form of free service effective from when service is fixed.

Chris W
14-08-2004, 13:07
StuG, if you send me the mac address of your cable modem and your postcode i will have a look and see what the problems are here- as you have an engineer booked already this will just be to see why there were problems with the request going through in the first place.

All of the modems that are used on the ntl network can easily support 1.5mb from the original 3com CMX's to the current Ambit, so there would be no need to swap modems as a result of the speed upgrade. And Zeph, you are correct- it is only the PACE set top boxes that need to be swapped for Samsung boxes to receive the speed upgrades, stand alone modems are perfectly suitable for the upgrade.

MB

EDIT: oh and both the faults department and engineers do work saturdays- the network maintainence teams are working 24/7 as well ;)

Monkeybreath, Indeed they make work weekends but apparently the Faults team do not, and that is my issue. Repeatedly told by TS/CS they don't infact some charmed life as they finish at 4:30pm. So maybe somebody needs a kick up the rectum. FYI its the cambridge office, this may not have any bearing on the facts or it may do. Also TS/CS tried to ring them only after being on hold was I told this.

I thank you for your assistance I would love to take it on board if you do not mind I will pm the mac address.

It is not an outright problem as the first 5 days of my issue, I will be happy to issue my account number et cetera which will enable you to see the account notes etc and get aquinted with the messages. The Main problem is whenever I actually start to do anything with it eg browse and download, have been trying to get XP SP2 for instance.

The modem request was as a result of a few people suggesting this, also it was the initial diagnosis from TS to replace it. So why the request was made.

I will probably be a very happy duracell if this can be fixed.

Para use the PM function at the bottom of justanothern00bs post and send him the IP Address that way.

Not a good idea to post your IP Address on a public forum.

Hoping a passing Mod will asterisk out like i have.

What you are saying may well be right, Stu, but Matt is just following our standard policy of not encouraging any member here to share information that could identify them as an individual, or their individual PC, except to people who we as a team know to be NTL staff. We're not suggesting you're up to no good but I'm sure you understand that it pays to be cautious - the internet is still a bit like the wild west in this respect.

I have read in the forum about changing to ip by changing mac address etc or going to usb then back. Does this just pass the buck on to somebody else and not get the problem resolved or actually fix the problem.

Seems if the problem is just gonna move around then its not actually gonna get fixed however, if indeed it will fix the problem. Cool, but I am thinking if I stick with complaining about my connection and actually have an engineer vist etc this will get resolved.

I'm not certain that forcing the network to give you a different IP address will either solve your problem or pass your problem on to anyone else. I'm ready to be shot down over this, but AFAIK an IP addy is just like a phone number, it's unique to your PC but if there's a hardware fault somewhere between you and the network, it doesn't matter what the number is, you're going to have trouble.

I had a disconnect at 18:36 lasted bout 7 minutes

But im still the same. Oh well if other peeps are fixed then this is just me.

[My contact in NTL will be upset she hoped this might fix but alas nope, just to point out, 7 mins was i guess while they did something in our area and since I came back it has not been any better]

Finally got NTL faults ring me up, I have got an engineer booked for friday coming, this will mean i will be into my 3rd week of a unusable service.

I have made an agreement with NTL to get a credit for this lack of service plus more compensation in the form of free service effective from when service is fixed.hello mate i have just joined this forum to see about fixing my problem and it turns out you have the same problem! but the really spooky thing is im from st ives as well:Yikes: so how are you getting on resolving the problem?

I dunno matey, it seems there is a problem somewhere the engineer friday may find something, some of the peeps I have been speaking have tried to help so far but alas still no joy.

As some of the people are doing this in there spare time I do not want to take any liberties after all its in there own spare time.

But Anything I find out I will let peeps know

I am in the PE27 area, I have had no BB since the 6th! reported it and got a call back on the 11th informing me that there is a problem in my area and I would not get an engineer visit. Phoned BB Tech Supp on Sunday, to be told that there is no longer a problem in my area, so it must be a faulty modem (TJ210) They tried pinging but got nothing; they promised me an engineer would call by today. On the phone for best part of an hour, being redirected to the wrong dept. by the options (??) getting a rebate for having no BB for so long; given the direct number for Cambridge Engineers, which turns out to be invalid!! And finally promised a call back in the morning by a helpful guy called Chris (I did tell him I was on the verge of telling NTL that their modem and STB were on the front lawn for them to collect and switching over to Sky!!)

I came back upstairs and find all the lights on the modem and 2535 e-mails to sort through!!!!????

I posted this info on another thread, but it is worth saying here as I too am in the PE27 3 area!

No BB since the 6th; called on the 11th to tell me that it is an area problem; phoned Tech Supp on Sunday they said my CM (TJ210)was busted as they could not "Ping" it from their end and they promised me an engineer call out within 48 hrs; No engineer so called CS to have a bit of a rant; got pushed from pillar to post and eventually (after an hour) got to speak with someone who was v helpful, they have promised me a call back in the morning (8:00am) to let me know what is happening to my engineer; an hour later, the CM comes back to life flashing lights for all that it is worth.

Just spent the last 4 hours going through 2535 e-mails on webmail (outlook wasn't playing) Slow page loading is awful.

I downgraded from 1Mb to 600K on the 5th, is it a coincidence that the CM fell over the next day?

christoph
18-08-2004, 20:58
I was told that an engineer did not need to attend and that NTL could look into the problem remotely.
They also tested my cable modem while i was on the phone and the techie chap said my signal was fluctuating outside the specified limits!? That was on Monday morning approx 10am.
When icame home from work that evening my BB connection was ok, and has been since.

stuG
18-08-2004, 21:55
Well there is definately a problem in the area, NTL may not admit it, the techies may say the network is good but there is something wrong.

Some people offer to help and you pm them and nothing happens, they do not even read you message, even though they asked YOU to pm, the whole thing is leaving me jaded.

I am just going to wait until this engineer comes, if my connection is fixed then fine I will report that to here, else do not expect another response as the modem and anything connected to NTL will be packaged up and sent back and NTL can attempt to get there money for a service that they have not provided me with.

Sipowicz, when the engineer called and before he swapped my modem, my line was spiking erratically. This could be the problem you have. Which modem do you have again?.

I would spend a bit of time explaining to tech support the problems are intermittant and point them to this thread. I think you need an engineer to test your line while your present preferable.

Some of the chaps in here I have received help from my well offer in a pm to help you out.

To help prove my case....

I ran a ping to a well known site something like www.yahoo.com
in command prompt

ping www.yahoo.com -t

then... try downloading a BIG file

see what happens to the ping rates my guess is they may say "request timed out"

tell them that might help them understand the problems.

Sipowicz
20-08-2004, 22:24
stuG, I have the TJ210; I have explained the problem so many times to them, and have suggested that they look at this thread in this forum. The most help I got was last night when the guy at Tech Support suggested that the power on my line is lower than it should be. Nothing at my end has changed other than my request to down speed to the 600/750 service.

I have had just 2 lights on the modem - power and pc. Cable flashes intermittently (every 3 or 4 seconds) and the data light blinks every now and then. When it is working (like now) the speeds are slow, Power, cable and pc lights are "on" and the data light is flashing constantly.

They supposedly tested last Sunday (asked for the mac address of the modem) they got no response and said the modem was dead and arranged for an Engineer to call me with an appointment. I am still waiting for the call (as I am from my call to Tech Supp last night!!!)

both 2||para and Sipowicz, if you have logs of calls to/from ntl i would seriously call them up, explain your problems and make sure you take nothing less than a engineer call out. [Edit: or a later suggestion]

I backed my call up to customer services explained who I had spoken too and asked them to please ensure a engineer IS booked.

After that I placed a call with customer retentions (the people who when you want to kill the BB service, armed with your call logs and reference numbers (they keep notes as well in TS, this also they can read and proves your case), explain your situation to them and they will a) push this forward as well and/or b) you can talk turkey about getting some form of renumeration package..

Beware retentions is monday-friday 9-5.

I wish I could have suggested 1 thing to them, I would swap the modem and all they have to do is get it to me, and i would have called with the new mac address. (this will mean you WILL get a new ip).

Hope some of this proves useful, pm me and I can explain a little more how and what I did.

Engineer called today (V prompt and V helpful) he could not understand why the modem was intermittent and why the speed was so awful. He suggested that we swop the modem and take it from there.

I now have a shiney new NTL200 modem and it is going like a steam train! (The cynic in me says "for how long?") Whilst the engineer was registering the new modem, they checked the house address and they still had me down at my old address (funny, the bills always come to the right place!) - now I went through this 3 times before, when I 1st called CS about the problem on the 6th; when I called again on the 15th and again on the 17th - I may have done it again on the 19th!)

All of these problems started when I downgraded from 1mb to 600k, is it a coincidence that the problems started then? If they still had me living at my old house (when I upgraded to 1mb) then somewhere in the process, I have fallen off of the system. I assume that the low speeds that I have been getting are some kind of default setting and that the disconnections happen because the modem should not be registered at this address! (which it should have been when I moved house)

Anyway, all systems go.........

2nd 128K took 9453 ms = 13866 Bytes/sec = approx 115 kbits/sec
3rd 128K took 8781 ms = 14927 Bytes/sec = approx 124 kbits/sec

My pings are back to the 20-30 mark and little downtime, which is nice.

I shall phone ntl (customer retentions) 2morrow and inform them that I am now happy.

I think the line has been fixed along with some other stuff.

I will be keeping my eye on this anyway.
