...range :p:

Yep, I know what my actual IP addy is but, for security purposes, I would like to know the range of possible addys.

Yep, I have been to see Robin (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/robin.d.h.walker/cmtips/ipaddr.html) (where is he these days?) and have found 5 possible ranges. 62.252.xxx.xxx to 62.255.xxx.xxx. 80.0.xxx.xxx to 80.7.xxx.xxx. 81.96.xxx.xxx to 81.111.xxx.xxx. 82.0.xxx.xxx to 82.31.xxx.xxx. 213.104.xxx.xxx to 213.107.xxx.xxx.

Unfortunately, I'm only allowed a single start and a single end address so I can only have one range. Given that I am in Warrington on SACM, is there a way of limiting a bit?

If you can only have one range then you've got a massive range of numbers to include all the above in that. 62.xx thru 213.xx
AFAIK I don't think certain "areas" have certain ranges, looking back at my security config on mysql I note that I've had all the ranges you list with the exception of the 213.104 ... one

I don't think so, as in my area, on my fixed line & SACM, I have been on pretty much every single range listed above, and it seems pretty random, although generally my IP stays the same for 4 months or so.

It's not random, although it may sometimes appear that way. There are certain blocks assigned to different areas, but as areas expand new blocks are added. These are generally from whatever large RIPE-assigned block we're currently working through, currently 82.xx

So an area may have an original 213.106.x.x range, then subsequently be extended with an 80.x range, an 81.96 range and an 82.x range. Because these are all available simultaneously, you could get an address from any of them.

Oh bum!

Currently, I have an address in the 82.1.230.xxx block - the whole of which appears to be assigned to Warrington - am I correct? If I change my MAC address, I appear to get another address in the same range. If I did it again but the block was now full, would I get an address from the next block assigned to Warrington?

ntl
----------
82.0.0.0 - 82.31.255.255
80.0.0.0 - 80.7.255.255
217.137.0.0 - 217.137.249.255
81.96.0.0 - 81.111.255.255
213.104.0.0 - 213.107.255.255
62.252.0.0 - 62.255.255.255
194.168.0.0 - 194.168.255.255

Thats all the ranges I have, and it picks up every single ntl: user thats ever visited my site (a good 4,000+ already).

I have a tool available, where if you enter an IP address, it will show you what ISP the user is on! (As long as its a UK ISP)

Its available at: www.dslzoneuk.net/isp_check.php
