Thanks (not that I use ad-aware, and not that it's going to be any different to any other free version) .. but more importantly, thanks for letting us know you're only holiday from the 12th to the 27th of August ;)

lavasoft has released adware se, this software superseeds the original adware software and provides a reworked engine to improve scans and results by providing many improvments to the core product.

Initial tests by ExtremeTech readers have found the SE software to be more effective, but slightly slower than the the old AdAware 6.

The new engine boasts a significant number of new improvments, according to the company. The SE software was designed with encrypted files to prevent third-party applications from uninstalling it, and actively works to prevent DLL injection, a means of hacking a PC that does not require information to be written to disk, only the system memory. The breadth and depth of the scanning procedures has been increased, and the software uses a new "CSI" tool for attempting to predict and identify spyware behavior that the software doesn't have stored in its database.

In addition, the software actively works to block pop-up ads, the company said.

Thanks. Have installed the new version.

I wonder how it "actively works to block pop-up ads" as Idon't think it runs in the background.

Lots of extra freatures there though.

Adaware sucks if you ask me, SpyBot S&D, which is free by the way, is much better, finds more spyware and has automatic update too.

Spybot has had far fewer updates recently compared to Ad-Aware and I know of no automatic update - how do I set this facility ??
:dozey:

PS: I use both Spybot and Ad-Aware (and Spywareblaster ;) )

Actually Frank I find that having the both together is essential because the updates between the two seem to be staggered. What one misses the other finds mainly due to this I believe. :)

Although as basa says SpyBot has had fewer updates recently. :(

Incog.

Same here. Spybot seems to find some things which Ad-Aware doesn't, & vice versa.

Fair enough, the people have spoken :D

No, but seriously, I tried the newest ad-aware pro just before I posted and the interface is really horrible I thought. And it gives you unnecessary warnings about silly things like the IE homepage has changed, and it should set it back to msn.com. WTF, no thank you very much.

One of my network policy's changes the users home page. This allways pops up on adawares list as a problem and will chnage the homepage for the user :(

Its part of the users profile that they have a web-page on a network drive as there home page.....

Thanks a bunch Lavasoft

On the up side it does find things that spybot does not and vica versa as matt d stated. I just wish it would leave my homepage alone !

You can change it in the settings. I've just downloaded SE now and the default homepage in there was msn. So just change it to whatever your homepage is. It's under the default settings.

Same here, also the new version of Norton Anti-Virus also picks up some spayware, adware and diallers too. Each one always picks up at least one that the others haven't.

In AAW 6 you could tell it to ignore it, does SE not do that then?

Yes you can. In default settings you can tell ad-aware what your homepage is, so it doesn't flag it up as an error.

The problem is that each user has there own homepage so when one user logs off and another logs on the home page chnage is flagged. Irs not a massive problem as most users dont run it ( or have access to it ).......

Aside from that small propblem its a pretty decent program.
