We are having a realy bad thunder storm here in Luton. The thunder is so loud it is shaking the house. The rain is so heavy that we have totaly lost the sky signal....

And becouse it was so hot last night I left the skylight window in our bedroom open and now the bed is totaly soaked :(

I have never seen a storm like this !!!!

The rain is now so heavy that you can hardly see through it !!!

I guess it'll be with us in the midlands soon then, thanks for the warning Stu :)

Hope the bed dries quickly.

we had one in london a little while ago... very very loud and close as well

We had one like this about 10 days ago, so I'm hoping we don't get another one because:

1. While looking out of the front window, I noticed that the water level appeared to be creeping higher and higher (our front yard didnâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t appear to be draining)

2. When the water level reached the bottom of my car door :Yikes: , I thought Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢d better move the car into the middle of the road (BIG camber in our street), bearing in mind I now have to drive to Scunthorpe every day, and I didnââ‚ ¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t want the car to float away!

3. Came back in to be told by my girlfriend that the drain in the garden was blocked  , so thought Iâ₠¬ÃƒÆ’¢â€žÂ¢d better take my pointy stick to un-block it.

4. Opened the back door to be met by approx 6 inches of water that was just under the level of my door  , so quickly proceeded to drain.

5. Found out that the drain wasnâ₠¬Ã¢â€žÂ¢t blocked, but that the entire system had backed up †“ yep, I was wading through drain water :( :( :( .

6. Went back into kitchen to find that drain water had seeped through the kitchen wall and knackered the carpet †“ bugger   !

7. We now have 2 industrial fans trying to dry the concrete which is just too loud, but at least the insurance is paying for all of it!

Pictures Stu turning the shed into an Ark, just in case. This quickly turned into picture of Stu laid on the soaking bed with two voluptuous women massaging shower gel onto him just like the advert. Quick Stu, the wife's coming. :dozey:

yep, i am fascinated by lightning... i love just sitting and watching it. last night something <300m from my house got struck, i think it was the church...that was fun :)

personally, i think all the southerners don't know what a real storm is ;) we get crappy horrible weather up here all the time, yet yorkshire never gets a mention... then it starts drizzling in london and we get severe flood warnings for them, and still no mention of our weather...

i think all the people down in that area over-react when there is "bad weather"... :Yikes:

and yes, i do have sour grapes about it ;)

oh, and god forbid my houe ever gets flooded... i am about 50m higher than the river in my town centre, just think of all the poor souls down there is my house gets water in it

But what about the phone line?

Stuartbe
03-08-2004, 20:43
Good point.....

Though a decent sure strip or UPS will have phone, coax and mains protection.

Dave Stones
03-08-2004, 20:44
is the phone line at risk? i mean, waht are the odds of the green box at the end of the drive being struck/..? :erm:

Stuartbe
03-08-2004, 20:49
Lightening can easily hit underground cables,,, In fact test in the states have proved that an underground cable is more likely to be struck..... As lightening strikes up and not down it apears that the cable acts as a capasitor atracting the strike.

It does not have to be a direct strike - For example , someone on the in he same area could have there TV antenna struck. The surge would go though there home and if any of this persons gear is plugged into the phone line the surge could jump to it...

You have to remember that the average strike has enough energy to power London for a day !!!

I'm with Dave on this, ya bunch of pansies!

a little bit of rain & your complaining about it, we get it all the time.
(I'm kidding here folks!)

Isn't it about time people that live in areas that can allow flood water to enter thier homes (like below the level of the road etc) took some precautions against flooding instead of leaving it upto the councils (who are not going to do it).

It would save an awful lot of heartbreak etc if people kept thier prized photo's etc either upstairs or up high & not in the bottom draw of the kitchen cuboards etc.

There is nothing stupid about it, rain is just a commonplace occurance in this country, if I wear a cagoule etc I still get wet, either on my legs or through increased sweating. So its much easier just to get wet.

As it is I carry a toolkit, a first aid kit, a sweatshirt, sandwich box, kitchen sink etc. Having waterproofs too increases the load. :(

And I didn't know if was likely to pour down like that - lol

We've just had a very brief, but very nasty, thunderstorm in central Watford. Made the office windows rattle!

I think there were more people out on the street for a mooch than you'd see on a Saturday night, freaky.

We had one Wednesday evening.

Heaviest rain I've ever seen.

And when I got to work Thursday morning....turned out that the guttering & drains had blocked, & loads of water had collected on the roof & then gone through the roof & ceiling, & into the labs....agh.

It was really bad here earlier - it was also the 1st proper thunderstorm my sprog had heard.

He loved the 'rumbly' and the 'funny lights'.... as I was rushing round unplugging all my computer stiff :)

So global warming is responsible for cold weather?

IIRC, these storms are the remnants of the hurricanes originating in the Caribbean, which strike the East seaboard of the US and travel across the Atlantic. By which stage they're weak, and only cause a bit of thunder, lightning and rain.

that point was also made, also something that was pointed out that the atlantic current is 'one way' its hitting us so basically we are in the path of the remints of various storms from the US, usally we would be getting air stream from the atlantic and from europe.....

It's responsible for the recent large variations in the weather, so yes - global warming can be to blame for unusually cold weather, do some reading. :)
