I wanted to be a pilot as a kid. I switched to programming because I never thought i'd pass the physical to be a commercial pilot, and it was pointless trying to fight it. Private pilot licenses/flying are very popular out here (and cheap) so I might still do it, if I move out.

Rules are being relaxed now.
The glasses issue was only for fighter pilots, if you wanted to fly troop carries etc you could wear glasses, provided your eye sight was adequate without them.

And unlike fighter pilots you can be blind as a bat because a Storm Trooper has never been known to shoot at a Jedi knight or a registered bona fide hero or heroine and hit them.
