A question taken from a quiz currently doing the rounds at the DVLA - name 3 substances which solidify upon coming in to contact with air/oxygen....

Hmmm, not solder, that solidifies below a certain temperature.

Some substance in blood.I can't quite remember if it is called fibrogen or not.

It is what causes wounds to clot and heal.

Lava? Glue?

Lava just solidifies cause it's cooling.

Play-dough?

Hmmm...latex might be a possibility. I have to add, the substances immediately solidify, as opposed to a gradual process.

Hmmmmm, how about these two, or do they count as one
1) Silk - the raw excretion from the silkworm's mouth
2) Spider Silk

So are we ruling out production of a solid as a result of pressure, temperature, and solubility changes?

Just chemical interactions between a substance and air/oxygen which directly result in solidification....jeez that's tough.

Cinder Cone Volcanoes Unlike the violently explosive eruptions that created the rocks of Hole-in-the-wall, cinder cones form when lava erupts as relatively benign liquid fountains. As lava is spewed through the air, it solidifies instantly, often preserving bubbles created by escaping gasses. If an eruption of this type continues long enough, fragments accumulate to form a cinder cone. Cinder cones can develop very quickly. They typically end their lives with an outpouring of black basalt lava that flows across the landscape.

Silicone rubber is solvent-free and sets on contact with moisture in the air. Will that do?

Trying to work out why anyone would need to know that gobbet of info.

The smell alone would tell you. ;)

Incog. :D
