Does anybody know off hand an ISP that offers either 512k up and down the line or 1Mb down and 512k upload.

What i'm after is a good upload as i have two computers and two x boxes on a network.
Not all will be online at once but there will be times where the kids want xbox live and i'm working.

I'm just finishing up my termination period with NTL (1mb service....Ha....you must be joking) and would like to sort this before the end of the Month if possible.

Thank you people

To get 512 upload you either need SDSL (very expensive) or 2 bonded lines. To details of bonded lines from nildram http://www.nildram.net/bonded.htm they charge for the first line at normal price, then the 2nd/3rd/4th are £10 per month extra and £35 setup.

If I stick with a 1Mb line with 256k upload will a lower contention rate make that much of a difference?

Buldog ofer 50:1, 40:1 and 20:1 in my area, is there much difference bvetween these rates?

It really does depend how many people you are sharing the connection with anyway; if you are sharing with only 20 people, it won't make a difference whether you have a 50:1, 40:1 or 20:1 connection ratio. As far as i know there isn't a way to find this out... but if i am wrong i am sure someone will be along to correct me!

I guess it really depends on how much you want to spend and how important it is that your connection runs at 1024/256 all the time.

If i contact bulldog will they be able to tell me that info.

Or do you think that they will just try to sell me the most expensive package.

They offer a 2Mbps download 256k upload at 40:1 contention for £37.99 a month which is about the same as my NTL cost at the moment
so not much of a difference financially but a big diference in performance (i think?)

I was going to mention that Bulldog do a 400k upload service but then I noticed that your in St. Albans, and thats only on some of the central London exchanges :( Sorry

As for the contention on Bulldog, personally I get the full upload and download all the time. I can't say that it's like that everywhere, but so far (touch wood) I've had no trouble with them. :)

From what I gathered it was normal price per line and an extra £10 to bond them. so if X=line price it would be
X+10+X (for 2 bonded lines)
or
X+10+X+10+X (for 3 bonded lines)

So if we assume standard line rental is £25 (cant be bothered looking right now to see if thats right) the cost would be
25+10+25=ÂÂÂà ‚£60 per month for a 1MB down 512up connection and not £35 like you said though I Could be wrong :) or I may have misunderstood you.

hmm... i see what you mean. It doesn't make it entirely clear on the nildram site... i have read and re-read it but still can't be sure. I guess the only way to find out is to ask them! :)

Thanks guys,

I think i'll do just that, give nildram a call see what they say.
If its going to be £60 as you suspect i think Bulldog is going to be cheaper for the 20:1 ratio and larger download. just have to make do with 256k upload for the time being

How about Easynet? Can you get them in your area? They are a LLU ISP too. I could get 8Mbps up and down online my line here in Stoke, if I paid £199p/m! :D

ok I just phoned Nildram up at the nice (quite laid back) guy gave me the below figures, based on two ADSL lines bonded together to get me a 1mb down and 512k up.

1. I would need 2 BT lines, one per ADSL line (more if you bond more ADSL packages)
2. Two dsl500 Nildram packages at £25.52 +VAT per month
3. Two £50 account setup charges
4. One off payment of £35 to bond them together
5. plus an additional £10 per month to have the bonded account.

My maths tells me for a 1MB/512K ADSL line it would cost:

£135 setup
£70 per month
and the cost of two BT lines?

:Yikes: when compared my 1MB/256K NTL cable line costs me £37.99 pm is that upload really worth the cost and hassle!  :disturbd:

:Yikes: He runs shreiking to the hills...........

Looks like Bulldog then. They work out nearly half price for 1Mb down and 256K up. :D

:tu: Oh! and thanks very much Cas for clearing that up for me once and for all.

Hope to see you online sometime with the rest of the clan:)

Wouldn't you need to pay BT for install of that second line too.

I don't know it is a long time since I've had BT. Maybe Casper could volunteer to phone BT and ask. :D

Yes, for sure you do...each ADSL line will need a BT line :Yikes: :)

Erm nah it's impossible to get symettrical 8Mbit over ADSL1 :)

The max package Easynet do is either 2Mbit in both directions or 8Mbit down 768kbit up, at a 5:1 (I think!?) contention ratio. The cost of this service is a mere £300 a month + VAT with a £950 setup charge.

I'll take two!
