View Full Version : STB wireless router connection nightmare

Hi everyone, i posted this at www.nthellworld.com and was lucky enough to get a reply from mattdodd who said id be much better off asking here, so i am :D

here is my original post:

ive read loads of posts about it here and followed the guides to connecting through a STB on links given here, but im still stuck, once i have done everything and try to connect i get a connection error on the 4th stage of connecting.

the one thing that might be affecting it is that the broadband connection coming through my STB goes to a wireless router and about 3 PCs in my house connect with netgear MA101 USB wireless adapters, because of this i cant realy unplug my PC from the connection and plug in the xbox where it was plugged in, because my PC uses the wireless connection and the xbox uses an ethanet connection.

my router is a Netgear MR314 wireless router

any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks....

ok, ive read this over and it makes little sense, so ill try to explain my problem better,

in my house i have a LAN network with 3 sometimes 4 computers all connected to a Netgear MR314 wireless router with broadband coming through the NTL STB, using Netgear MA101 USB adaptors to conenct to the router not ethanet cables, BUT, my xbox is connected to the router with an ethanet cable.

At the moment i get a comunications error when i try to connect to live, which says to check my router is on the list, or check my MTU settings are high enough, (im not sure if these are ok but i think my router is, because its on the live website).

a couple of other things that might affect it but im not sure, my connection uses a network keycode to access the network because its wireless, so would i need to use the keycode if im connecting my xbox by ethanet cable to the wireless router?

any help would be realy realy great, im dying to get on live,

also i was told that Casper uses a wireless router when connecting to live, meaning it is possible :D
so maybe he knows how to make it work

:welcome: to the forum ToM! :D

I think you'll find this Wireless Gaming thread (http://www.nthellworld.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=1342) useful ;)

Basically, you need a Wireless bridge to connect your XBOX (i.e. make your XBOX wireless) to your wireless router.

Yes, you will need need to enter your WEP code into the Bridge setup :)

That "mattdodd" is quite helpful. ;) :)

Glad to see you over here, ToM.

Whether or not you follow Caspar's advice & make your XBox wireless, you'll still need to do as Andre suggested & update your router's firmware, & then apply the specific workaround for your router. (Cheers for that Andre - I didn't think of that in my reply over at .com)

This is the correct link for your router's firmware update (Andre's link is for the wrong model - not his fault - the workaround page at xbox.com links to the wrong version firmware):

MR314 Firmware version 3.29 (http://www.expressresponse.com/cgi-bin/progsnp/netgear2/srchjnnp?search_type=fdocument&search_input=D100271.htm&session_id=1036529604.25046.8&faq_tplt=1&faq1=MR314%5fdwnld&faq2=MR314&level=product&prodfamily=routers%5fand%5ffirewalls&product=MR314&template=). The direct link to the file is here: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/329CF0B11.ZIP

Here's the workaround link again: http://www.xbox.com/uk/live/start/connect/faq/workarounds.htm#MR314

If you decide not to get a wireless bridge (but I'd recommend it, they sound quite handy), you should still be able to connect your XBox to XBox Live via an ethernet port on your router. Just make sure the router has the latest firmware & you apply the workaround given at xbox.com. Edited to remove mention of auto IP & DNS - I've just read the workaround, & it says the XBox needs a manual IP & DNS assigned due to the workaround & DMZ

Hope that's some help. :)

Tez (mattdodd over at nthw.com ;) :) )

Amazon have the WET11 wireless bridge:

http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B000066JQU/qid%3D1059000551/202-1716570-1955805

It's £87.99 though!

Yes, you should still be able to connect your XBox to Live, via your router, using ethernet instead of buying a wireless bridge. As above, you need to update the router's firmware & use a workaround.

EDIT: Keycode...dunno. Cas will know.

hehe, thanks Tez and Casper and Andre,

i think ill stick with an ethernet connection for now but invest in a wireless bridge once ive got some money (spent it all on the xbox, lol)

ive downloaded the firmware and im about to read the workaround, but with my technical skills, its gonna be a looooooooooong night.. :D

lol, dont think that would go down too well,

um, im not too sure where to put the firmware files, do they go in my %systemroot% ?

Tezcatlipoca
24-07-2003, 01:51
lol, yeah, guess it wouldn't.

Firmware files:

Just extract the zip to a temp directory somewhere. The actual firmware file from the zip (the *.bin file) needs to be uploaded onto the router. The router's Reference Guide (PDF file here: ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/netgear1/MR314_refguide_326.pdf) has info on doing the firmware upgrade ("software upgrade") - you need either a browser that supports HTTP upload (Netscape 3 or higher, apparently) or an FTP client.

ToM
24-07-2003, 12:02
k, i cant find the HTTP upload on netscape 7.1, anyone know how to do it as im not great netscape expert?

I do have SmartFTP which i could use, but how do i know the address to upload the stuff to? for my router?

oops. sorry didnt think of that :spin:

im still unsure of how to upload the firmware file to my router, the Netgear info told me to go to the software update munu which isnt there in netscape 7 for me

ToM
24-07-2003, 14:36
i didnt know you could,

how?

Tezcatlipoca
24-07-2003, 19:22
Don't know if IE can do it. It can be used as a basic FTP client, I think, but I'm not sure if it would work for this???

As you have SmartFTP, it's probably better to use that. The instructions for FTPing the firmware are in the Ref Guide I linked to. The IP address to upload to is the router's IP address. You'll need to know the router password.

ToM
25-07-2003, 16:19
ok ive updated the firmware successfully, and ive done the workaround and im about to try and connect, but i need to put in some addresses manually and thats all fine accept the alternative DNS server has to be the one that your ISP tells you to use, any idea what that would be for NTL?

ToM
25-07-2003, 17:46
ive updated the firmware and done the workaroubd that Tez posted but still no luck,.

i do get an error message that suggests that my MTU setting may not be over 1365 or sumthing,

how do i change my MTU setting?

p.s. i found the alternative DNS server ok ;-)

right, this has got me pulling my hair out, it still doesnt work for me (but i havent done the thing Doctor E posted yet, too hard for me)

but luckily, im spending some time with my dad this weekend and his company used to specialise in networking, so im gonna get him to do that fix and make it work dammit.

And if he cant do it, im just gonna have to pay for my own broadband connection :p
one of the ones designed for live so it will work.

but lets hope it doesnt come dont to taht :D

so thanks for everyones help, tommorow is the big test,
and if i get it working, ill post my gamer tag,

if i dont, ill get a new conection and better router when i get back from holiday in 2 weeks time from now.

I've never needed to mess around with MTU settings myself, but I assume there'll be an option in your router's settings (my Linksys has an MTU option, so I guess your Netgear will do). The Reference Guide may mention it.

Have you tried Doctor E's (Nige's) link? I think that's an alternate to the netgear workaround.

Maybe Doctor E can give you more info on the thing he posted?

Pay for another broadband connection: NO! Don't do that! Certainly don't pay for the crappy NTL BB & Console Service. The only problem with your set-up is the router, as it isn't XBL compatible unless you do some sort of workaround. You don't need a new bb connection. If you try everything & can't get the netgear to work, then get a better router (e.g. an XBL compatible Linksys one) - you won't need a new connection.

ToM
27-07-2003, 01:53
k, just the router then,

i did your workaround before aswell installing the firmware, and that sort of made progress, its weird, sometimes i get the MTU error message when i try to connect, and sometimes it simpley says "Failed to connect to xbox live'

weird thing.

neways im going to bed, lets hope tommorow is an xbox live filled day.

p.s. i registered on britxbox for the hell of it, my name is JeD

Tezcatlipoca

lol, while I'd like to able to take credit for the workaround, it ain't mine. Andre posted the link originally, I just pointed it out again.

OK, I hope you get it working today.

If you try absolutely *everything* (including Doc E's link), still can't get it working, & so decide to get a new router, then here's a fully XBL-compatible router that should work perfectly:

Linksys BEFW11S4 Wireless Access Point Router with 4-Port Switch: http://www.linksys.com/products/product.asp?grid=33&scid=35&prid=540 (the one recommended by Caspar in the Wireless XBox thread in the Useful XBox info forum. It's listed as fully XBL-compatible on the XBox.com website). Amazon have it for £59.99: http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/B00005ARK3/qid%3D1059315026/202-7667844-5009468

Joined BritXBox too? Good on ya. :)

Well, I am no expert on networking, but I telnetted to my router using NCSA Telnet for Macintosh (there are may PC equivalents), logged onto it as the administrator and set the filter up exactly as that link says. The only hiccough i had was making sure i set the right KIND of filter. You have to make 'generic' one, not the other kind. If you go for a generic fiulter, then the screen looks exactly like the one in the link and it's easy from there.

One thing that I found with my XBOX Wireless adapter was that it would only connect to my wireless network when the wireless network's WEP default transmit key is set to #1. I had tried a ton of different configurations, and even though the XBOX Live dashboard indicated that the XBOX had detected and connected to my wireless network, I still couldn't connect to the XBOX Live server.

My wireless network had been set to Default Transmit Key #2, and all devices on the network connected to the network using Key #2's 128-bit 26 hex encryption code. However, my XBOX would not connect using the Key #2 encryption code. But as soon as I changed my wireless network to Default Transmit Key #1 and entered the Key #1 encryption code into the XBOX settings, it connected to the XBOX Live server without any problems.

So if you're not using Key #1 for your wireless network encryption, try changing it. That should hopefully resolve the problem.
