View Full Version : Email completely deleted after recent password problems

I have been un-able to access my mailbox for most of today via normal pop3 or via webmail, with error messages like incorrect password and unable to connect to message store.

I keep a few days worth on the server so I can use the likes of webmail and then retrieve a copy locally etc.

I have finally managed to access my mailbox tonight using my normal password but there is NO email in there. This morning there were at least 50 messages on there and they have not been pulled down remotely by home machine, which is off.

Unless the account has been compromised, which I doubt, my last 2 days worth of email have all gone! I sent a test to myself a few minutes ago and the test did appear in the mailbox correctly, so mail seems to be working fine now but my last 2-3 days worth of mail has all been nuked.

I didn't put this in the large 'email problems merged' thread as the last few pages mentioned the common problem of the server being down or failing on password, but this seems to be different and something I haven't had before! Had this with BT a good few years ago when using talk21, they managed to lose all of my archive mail :| Obviously I have local backups but not of the last few days.

Anyone else experienced this?

There are mail issues reported on the ntl Server Status page.

There are mail issues reported on the ntl Server Status page.Cheers have just seen this, although it does report that people will be having problems receiving mail, which isn't the problem as its coming through ok, its just everything over the past 2-3 days has gone :(

I've also just checked with a few other people on NTL and they have had the password issues but on the whole have been getting mail for today and this evening with no mail lost.

Will wait and see what happens and hope it mysteriously comes back

There was a message on the server status page that warned that email left on the server may be lost forever.

If you have access to the internet why not just download the emails at the time instead of leaving them on the mail server?

NTL never cease to amaze me, bunch of ****ing ****ers.

I had VERY important emails, that I received whilst at work which I checked in my lunch hour, and now they are trying to say that it could be lost forever?

****ING ****ers! :-/

I had VERY important emails for **** sake :|

I've put up with NTL's poor email service for over a year now, but this really makes me mad. After losing emails a few months ago and promising that "it won't happen again", the same thing seems to have happened tonight. NTL's service status page marks the email problem as 'closed' but conveniently forgets to mention that all emails on the server were lost. There is now no message on the status page informing users of this fact.

Losing people's emails is UNACCEPTABLE. I don't know of any respectable ISP that would lose emails if they had a server issue - they have systems in place to prevent this.

I thought the email servers were supposed to be getting better not worse?!

There was a message on the server status page that warned that email left on the server may be lost forever.Cheers for this, makes me feel slightly better than its not just me but not much :) I am looking at the server status page -> http://www.ntl-isp.ntl.com/ServiceStatus/ at the 3 email issues posted on the 7th and 8th, all of which are listed as fixed and I couldn't see any reference to mail being lost forever?

If you have access to the internet why not just download the emails at the time instead of leaving them on the mail server?
I do download mails from my main machine usually very frequently, sods law it had to happened when I hadn't for a few days. Whilst away I just use webmail then check them whilst getting back.

Im in the same position today, again sods law the day something major goes tits up its always when you are expecting something important, replies to job application related emails in my case.

Just makes you realise that you can't rely on NTL mail for important stuff and its probably worth paying a few quid to have your mail hosted elsewhere.

Where is this message

I do know that if an MSS fails they sometimes switch to a backup and while that is in service you can't get to mails stored on the other one until they switch back, or copy them over.

Pem is right.

when the MSS's fall over, any mail that has not been downloaded since the server fell over will be unavailable until the server is restored. If a backup server is put on, then messages received since this one was put on will be received, and once the main server is restored, the messages from the period inbetween will come through. This is why people have had delays in receive messages.

Last time a MSS fell over there was a problem recovering some of the messages, i believe Pem posted some information about this in the main email problems thread. This is the first time i have seen this happen and i am sure ntl have learnt from this (although the regular cynics would disagree.)

Hope this makes things a little clearer.

got the same problem here.. only missed a few mails that i know of but how can i follow up a mail i didn't know i missed.. supposed i missed a really important mail about buying viagra or getting a mortgage in the US for a really low price :)

this is annoying and the status page isn't helpfull enough any more since the new design..

unfortately at work i can only access http and not pop3 so have to leave mails on the server until the evening..

as a side note was nthellworld down as well as i couldn't reach here either..
