I know this is more of a software query but thought i'd try here because i want to be able to D/L from a site... I've already tried one avi editor by fadetoblack on their trial period but didn't really have the time to evaluate it properly before it was rendered useless.
What i'm looking for is a downloadable program, with a little sophistication but not too complicated that it really needs a manual, i'm more of a learn by using sort of person, i can just about use Dreamweaver without using a manual so you have an idea... if it's free software excellent! if it isn't.... it's not a great problem.

Had anyone tried one that they've found really worth the time and trouble? Any suggestions are welcome... providing they're about the avi editor ;)
Will need to find one before the end of next week.. and failing that will have to opt for the fadetoblack software.

Ta very much :D

Well, the program we teach the students at work is Adobe Premiere, but that is a bit wierd to learn, and is expensive.

Found what looks like a good Freeware Video Editor, Zwei-Stein Video Editor. It's at http://www.thugsatbay.com/software/index.html.

Might take a bit of learning as well, but seems to have a good range of features.. And it's free.

The two main video editors to try are vdub which is free and tmpgenc which is used for conversion to vcd/svcd for playing the files via a dvd player on your TV. Free versions are available for this too.

Visit http://www.doom9.org for downloads and many useful guides as to their use and also access to the main codecs you will need as well.

Hi Kink

the only one I've ever tried was Ulead Video Studio, version 5 at the time. It was quite easy to use & produced good results. Latest version is 7 - but it costs $90!!!

There is a 30 day "free trial" download available at

http://www.ulead.com/vs/trial.htm

- over 70 meg though!

Wow 70 mgs :( My pc is already having a bit of a memory problem... VM completely overloaded and the rest of it is struggling

But a 30 day trial is always good.. will try that one when the two i'm testing now have either killed my pc totally or have ruined the avi's i've already got :p

Thanks Gaz... you're a star Download Failed (1)

hiya

thanks for hugs  - have a look at the guy who pays the bills, though - it looks good?:)

sounds more like a small hard drive, than memory, to me ;)

- :erm: well more memory will help a small drive perform better, but you would be better upgrading both!

A small hard drive, yes.I've got a bigger one to fit,but I need to move these video files or lose them.
It's 20 G with 3.5 G spare,but over the past week I've been getting window's messages saying that there's insufficient memory.Several programmes have crashed as a result.
I'll be using my 7 days trial.

Thanks. I am downloading it this very minute.

I have a temporary interest in avi editors. Why? Because my new digital camera will take short avi clips. Unfortunately, I kept forgetting that if you hold the camera sideways then you really need to stand your monitor on its side to see the clip properly!

I found a couple of avi editors that would rotate the clip, but they both removed the sound. I then found a programme that would strip the sound from the original clip, but I have yet to find a program that will successfully join the silent rotated clip and the sound together. Hence my interest in trying the MS program.

After my recent experiences, I think I'll give up!

As I said, I wanted to join a soundless rotated avi clip and its separated wav sound file. MS Movie Maker succesfully joined the two together, but it converted it from portrait to landscape mode (without rotating it), which means that the people in it now appeared as dumpy dwarfs! Despite the fact that they were now the right way up and speaking it wasn't quite what I wanted!

More worryingly, I found out that MS Explorer was now partially crippled. Now this may have been because I'd also just downloaded the latest batch of MS security patches because of the W32Blaster worm scare. In any event, I used the XP System Restore to get me back to the point before I loaded Movie Maker, which seemed to solve the problem.
