Not sure if this has been done before. Is your Broadband through a Set top box or Cable modem?

Cast your votes now please. :D

I'll start off with Set top box.

Cable Modem

I have no use for NTL DTV, so don't have an STB

SACM. And if ntl had ever tried to fob me off with a STB connection I'd have been threatening to disconnect from day one. I don't see how they can seriously expect anyone to either run metres and metres of cable round the house, or spend money on WiFi that no-one who doesn't want a home network should need to bother with.

So I've stuck it out with a STB all this time.

STB, but that's the only option ntl gave me as I already had digi TV. Didn't even get an installation as the ntlworld site alluded to, just got a package of cables and a dodgy CD (correct "dis"connect) leaving me to run a long long long cable around my house.

Can I have a cable modem as well as the 1000 STB room heater. Would be nice to have that near the PC for the odd resets that are needed when BB completely stalls.

@ Towny, I also got BB before SACM's were around.
My install was done over the phone when I rang them up 10 mins after an engineer friend told me that our estate was being switched on. The girl on the other end had to check if it was true, I was given my log on details and told what I equipment I needed (x-over cable and Ethernet card which I already had) and 30mins later I was on :).

Never had a chance to go SACM but I will eventually.

Sheesh, guess I'm one of the lucky ones. Still think I'd have seriously considering ditching ntl if they'd tried to give me BB through my STB tho'. :disturbd:

Very reliable 2000 STB/Enet. This box is my No:2, box in my daughters bedroom, I fixed up a short cable through the wall myself.

When broadband was launched in our area we had to take TV as well so, originally, we had a 1000 series STB but never used the TV. After ~18 months the box died. Then, briefly, we had a 4000 series box but that never uploaded properly. Now (thanks to Neil and Bill C - cheers guys) I'm on SACM and it all seems fine - touch wood!

STB for me. I didn't have much choice as I already have (Somewhat?) Digital TV, So I didn't get a choice. I would like a separate SACM though.

Sadly my STB isn't as interesting as everyone's SACM. It only has one BB light and it is either off or on. The most exciting bit is when you boot it up, and it flashes for 5 seconds :)

STB for me. I went for that as I already had DTV and was desperate for a working BB connection as BT couldn't fix the fault on my DSL.

Beings as I already had crossover cable and my Mac had an ethernet port ready and waiting I was up and running within 45 minutes of calling NTL.

I now have an Airport basestation connected to the STB and share the connection between my Mac and my wife's XP PC.

When on 600k STB.

Upgraded to 1Meg model 2000 STB lasted 1 week before changed over to SACM.
STB could not keep pace at 1Meg.

Strange - mine seems to cope okay

I've had STBs running at 10Mb. 2Mb upstream too, and it seemed to cope.

Anyone out there using a *Samsung* STB for bb? Those are very rare beasts indeed, but I'd be interested in seeing if anyone has one.

I downgraded from 1Mb to 150k BB from work and only just got online about 20 minutes ago, you can certainly tell the difference. :D

Its going to take some getting used to again. :D

My problem stemmed from the the fact 'middle light' on STB not stable.
Stable about 20min/hr.

STB Pace 1000, I want to throw support at this because it seems to be getting little support so far. I've been on 600k Broadband through set-top-box and have hardly had any downtime on my connection. The few times it has stopped, all I have to do is switch off the STB for 30 secs, restart PC and everythings fine again. I only phone tech support in the early stages when I frst registered to iron out a few problems, since then, it's been excellent. Well worth the £24.99 a month. :) My first ever post on this new Cable Forum.

Welcome to the forum, pea-pod. :welcome: I'm curious - could you put a number to the few times your STB has needed a re-boot? Clearly it's an acceptable number for you; I'm just curious what you think is 'acceptable'. :tu:

Hi Towny, I guess maybe 2 or 3 times a year. I dont' know weather it's to do with having an old 1st generation 1000 pace box or it maybe something to do with my computer. Either way 2 times a year isn't bad.;)

Well I can't disagree with that. My STB (TV only, I have a SACM for BB) needs a re-boot probably every 8 weeks or so on average. But then I am a hopeless optimist and I do keep insisting on trying to use interactive. :erm: :(

NTL's Interactive service for digital TV is non-existant to say the least. Everytime I dare to try and press that (I) button, I end up craving to go upstairs to my PC and surf the web for a much pleasurable experience.

Motorola 4100 here, had 2 the 1st lasted 30 mins and died, the 2nd has never let me down. Its a work of art, shame Im leaving NTL but after I leave I may custom paint it, cut a side panel out add an led fan and place some poly there :)
