I have a NTL cable modem and use it for my desktop via usb, up until now, having bought a laptop whats the cheapest and easist way of network them both

Ethernet cards and a Router is by far the best way to go
or if you are not worried about cost go Wireless :) :)

I'll second that.

If money is an issue (the router will set you back about 50 quid), ICS (Internet Connection Sharing) is a cheaper option, but it requires you to have one pc (the gateway) on to have access on the other.

Get the router, if you start out with ICS you will end up getting one anyway;)

BTW: I found: www.practicallynetworked.com *very* helpful when I set up my home network.

Edit: wireless is more expensive, and apparently not that good for gaming. The pro is that you have fewer wires running through the house

i walked into a new b&q warehouse at the end of my road today to buy a dab digital ariel for my tuner. next to it they sell loads and i mean loads of cat5 cable and connections. there was loads! more than bloody pc world. they had all different sizes, the most was 750 metres for about £40 i think
