View Full Version : paying for email?

Some companies who provide broadband charge extra for mailboxes, for example metronet make a one off extra charge of £8.81 per email address.

The ntl email service is obviously in need of some repair, so if ntl did this and then charged customers to use email, would you be prepared to pay for a good reliable service including spam and virus filtering, and if so, how much?

No, NTL should fix it anyway.

It shouldn't be that hard to provide a reliable e-mail service.

Add an IMAP mail box and I may be tempted..

Never paid Yahoo in over 2 and a half years, and never had a problem with there free mailbox.. I actually did pay NTL for a BB Connection & Email address ( as this was included in the details when signing up), So No I wouldnt be happy about paying NTL for Email, or pipex for that matter.

ntl include email in their BB packages. So no I would not pay extra for this service from them.

In fact, as computer and electronics generally get either cheaper or more powerful or indeed both over time, we should see better email services for no extra cost, or even a reduction in cost of the overall BB package.

Another either or vote.

I won't pay for what I already pay for.Email services weren't an extra when I signed up.Why should I pay now.If that happens I'll just go back to my free Yahoo email address which I've had for ooooh let me see...........6 years. If I have to pay them I'd be quite happy to do so because at least they have it sussed.Or I'd go to Lycos because they at least offer online SMS as well.

yeh true! not many people in tech support even know it exists, but setting up an imap account in Outlook Express is a last resort if someone can't get POP email setup properly.

If you need any help on it... let me know! although i am sure you don't cos it is pretty straight forward ;)

Dotmac has been great for us. We have two addys, and long since diverted our ntlworld email through them to get round the perennial problems of having email from ntl. When we move house I'm going to look hard at ADSL, and would be very tempted by a no-frills service with email as an extra - so that I wouldn't have to bother taking it. I'm happy to stick with dotmac.

Since moving to freedom2surf email has ceased to be a problem. Up to 20 addresses, via Pop or IMAP or webmail. It just works. No SPAM, no problems.

Excellent

I wouldn't pay for ntl's email, as it is included in the broadband package.

However perhaps there should be some optional extras, such as porn/spam/virus filtering at an extra cost. That would mean for those that do not wish to bother with spam/porn/virus filtering can leave it to ntl for an extra fee each month. How this would work technically I'm not sure.

I still can't understand why people continue to use Ntl's email addresses when there are various free providers out there that give you all the features your looking for. As an addition you can keep these addresses when you change service providers :)

Many of the free providers have adverts, no SMTP, or other drawbacks.

My NTL email has been a bit flaky at times, but mostly good.

Yahoo.co.uk provide a great e-mail service they give you POP access and SMTP protected by authentication. Many others do the same. Ntl now attach a text advert to the bottom of your emails so there really isn't much of a difference apart from the server uptime.

I've had a few problems with Yahoo today, but its the first time in ages. Much better then Ntl's email IMHO. :)

No I wouldn't pay extra. We already pay NTL enough for BB for it to include a decent email service.

I do not move to one of the free providers for very much the reason that MattH has said. Adverts, webmail only (no pop access or charging for it), space limits.

ntl do not attach a text advert to the bottom of your emails when you send email in Outlook/Outlook Express or a mail client of your choice. They only do it on webmail.

Yahoo provide a free pop service on their .co.uk addresses, and provide you with a 6Mb in-box, which is only slightly smaller than Ntl's. In the end a small text advert at the bottom of your mail is a little price to pay for an e-mail service that works :)

And then of course there will be GMail from Google. Which will offer 8Gb of storage to everyone for free.

Interesting article about GMail here (http://www.theregister.co.uk/content/6/36714.html)

It seems the service will be paid for by advertising, and that there are privacy concerns already..
