Summary
The following FAQ provides common answers to queries surrounding the ntlworld webspace. Some answers are provided by ntl and expanded on by me, others by Cable Forum.
What are the ntlworld webspace settings?
URL format: http://homepage.ntlworld.com/user.name
FTP Server: upload.ntlworld.com
User Name: your username
Password: your password
The username and password above are for your
primary ntlworld account. If you have additional mailboxes then you cannot use those usernames/passwords. If you have changed the name of your primary user account, your webspace name may not have changed. You need to use your original user name's space, or contact customer services and request it is changed.
How much webspace do I get and what features does it have?
You get 55MB of standard webspace. From this you can serve standard html pages.
PHP, ASP, Server Side Includes (SSI) or CGI scripts are not supported, nor is there any support for databases. If you require such features, you'll need some paid for webhosting, for which there are many providers availalable.
How do I make a website?
Unfortunately that is outside the scope of this article, and ntl do not support the creation of a website either. The first page or ?home page? should be called index.htm though, and you could create this using tools such as Homesite or Dreamweaver. ntl advise you to look at internet resources site such as their webdesign FAQ (outdated) or
www.irt.org.
We would advise you to look at some of the following links instead if you are just starting out. You should err towards CSS layout rather than HTML layout as HTML is now redundant.
Do I get a domain name with my ntlworld webspace?
No, but you can register a domain name with many 3rd party vendors however. It is usually cheaper to get .uk domains from a UK-based registrar [
recommended example], and org/net/com domains from a US-based registrar [
recommended example]. You will also need hosting for your domain name.
How do I upload my pages to my webspace?
You use something called an FTP Client to upload you pages via the ntl ftp service. ntl recommend Terrapin FTP but do not support it, which isn?t particularly useful! In light of this, there is no advantage to you to use Terrapin FTP, and we recommend FlashFXP. It really does come to personal preference though, so have a read of some FTP software reviews and see which screenshots you like the look of the most. Other well known clients are Cute-FTP and WS-FTP and Smart-FTP.
You then use the details referred to in the first question of this FAQ and put these in the relvant places in which ever FTP client you are using. With most FTP Clients, you would then drag and drop your files from one side of the screen to the other to transfer them to the ntl server, whereupon they would be instantly live on your ntlworld webspace. In the case of Terrapin FTP, below, you would drag your files from bottom (local PC) to the top (ftp server).
