Firstly I recommend that you don?t use the usb cable to connect the modem. The Ethernet connection will give you better performance. If you don't have an Ethernet card in your system you can pick one up and fit it for around £10.00
The first step is to temporarily disable any firewall software on your PC. Firewall?s can create problem with getting a lease and halt the registration process. You now need to power down both the pc and the cable modem.
Connect the Ethernet cable from the modem to the pc. Now power up the cable modem and let it settle down 5-10 Minutes. Once the cable modem is ready you can power up the computer.
When the computer has booted into Windows:
- Click on Start, Run.
- In the box type cmd and press enter.
- In the black box type ipconfig /all
You will see a screen of information and all the adaptors in the system. Look for the Ethernet adaptor on the list. You should see under the entry "ip address" a number. This is your ip address. If the number is all 0s or has an address starting 169 then you need to type the following:
- ipconfig /release then wait 10 seconds
- Type ipconfig /renew You should see a message confirming that a new address has been obtained.
You now need to open a browser window and check that you don't have a proxy set. To do this click on tools, internet options and then connections. Now click on the LAN settings button and make sure that nothing is ticked. Click OK and now type into the address bar:
This will take you to the registration page. You will then need the MAC address of the cable modem (on the underside of the modem) and the pin number on the letter you received from NTL and one of the following serial numbers:
- Set Top box: ntl-ct8-cb487
- Stand Alone cable modem: ntl-ct8-cj486
Follow the onscreen instructions and presto, you will be up and running. Dont forget to re-enable your firewall and update windows with all the patches from the
Windows Update site.
