Are we SURE there's no 3G on the "everywhere" switch?
I saw my phone switch over, and it showed "Orange", and also showed the "H" icon for HSDPA, looks like it was getting a 3G signal from Orange, unless it just didn't bother updating the icon.

Indeed when I switch to Orange I don't get 3g but I do get E which I didn't used to.

I get GPRS on mine and the virgin sign rather than Virgin and 3G when on T-mobile

Oh, maybe the phone just doesn't update the indicator - and I thought "E" usually meant an "unavailable" network with Emergency calls only.

You need to switch off your phone and switch it back on to update like you do for activating all T-Mobile/Virgin services such as Voicemail.
To permanently use the Orange network, select manual, then Orange or virgin with the lowercase V.

The 'R' means you're roaming. So you are using the Orange network.

Re: Are we SURE there's no 3G on the "everywhere" switch?
I've had "E" come up when connected through Orange, but when tried to connect to the internet I got a message something like "You don't have a data connection package".
What is really annoying, which I've had a few times is you have a Virgin signal which is low but still 3G. But it changes to Orange with no internet connection.

Re: Are we SURE there's no 3G on the "everywhere" switch?
Might be worth getting the settings re-sent, in case they've changed, and on a lot of phones, it seems you have to enable "data roaming" or dismiss a warning.
It's a messy solution, but what can they do?
If they call the combined network T-Mobile, then everyone with Orange phones will need to be unlocked, or if they call it Orange, then every T-moble (and virtual networks on) will need unlocking.
Or if they call it something completely new, they'll have to hand out free unlocks to everyone!
So I guess we're doomed to this roaming compromise for ever more (the compromise on 3G, though maybe that could change at some point, and the compromise that if you are forced to switch networks (and I have one local place where it will ALWAYS swap to Orange), then you drop the call.
Actually, if roaming included 3G, then it WOULD make sense to operate the entire network under just one name, once everyone is roaming-enabled, and then phase out the other.
