new contract query

My son is a year and 4 months into a 24 month contract ,i have just phoned to try to upgrade him to a £17.99 a month contract (from a £10p/m contract)with a better phone and Internet minutes .The operator has refused point blank saying that the only way we can get a better contract is if we pay £90 to buy out the rest of the contract he is in .I find it strange that VM will not allow us to upgrade to a better contract anyone else had this experience and is there any way around it

Re: new contract query

There isn't a way around it.

The handsets are only provided free because they are balanced out by the cost of the contract over the minimum term

If Virgin allowed you to upgrade now they would lose money because they wouldn't have covered the full cost of the handset.

You can sometimes upgrade the tariff itself if you find it's not covering your usage, but to get a new handset it's either wait till the end of the term or do as advised

I doubt you'll find any other network that would allow it at this stage of the contract either
